This swap was inspired by a really cool Cabinet of Wonders exhibit I saw in Jamestown, Virginia. As you can read in this link, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabinetofcuriosities Cabinets of Wonder or Cabinets of Curiosities were galleries of the rare, odd, and precious in natural history, science, archaeology, geology, ethnology and religious relics. They inspired the modern museum. We now know that some of the wonders/specimens/relics were faked. This swap will be to create a mini "Cabinet of Wonders" for fun. I am guessing most people do not have precious artifacts around their house and if they do they are probably not keen on mailing them out. Therefore, we will have to use our imagination in creating our wonders! For your cabinet: You may wish to use a small wooden shadow box for your cabinet. You could make a cabinet from cardboard. You could also make booklet style catalog with the wonders inside the booklet. The cabinet should only be about 2 ft by 2 ft at the most. For your "wonders": ~This is the part where your imagination comes in and makes the mundane into the fantastical.~ Oooh! -It may just be a rock from your driveway but in your cabinet of wonders you can bill it as "A sacred pebble from the shore of the boiling green lake in the lost land of Tuminanicha in the far away country of Aagee." -It may just be a drawing of little angels from a holiday card but you can bill it as "Detail of putti from the rare painting by Master So and So, circa 1507." -It may be just a chipmunk bone you found in the woods but in your cabinet of wonder it can be a part of the "Blessed finger bone of Saint Annawanda of Prague." You get the idea. (If you don't get the idea, don't sign up.) Nothing too gross. Let's leave the shrunken heads, locks of hair, and narwhal horns out of our cabinets. Of course, a fake shrunken head made from an apple or papermache unicorn horn is okay. Actually, that would be cool. *****Please do not sign up if you would be offended if your partner sent something odd.****** Cabinets of wonders contained oddities. But- No real human products (ick!) and nothing taken from an animal by violence like ivory or pelts. Picking up a whisker that your cat dropped in the kitchen and saying it is from the Mythical Cat Bassett, Companion to the Pharaohs, is okay. ;) Your cabinet or booklet should contain at least 10 "wonders." USA and Canada only due to weight. Please feel free to open an international version if you wish. Open to people with a 4.9 rating and a number of completed swaps. I'll be banning anyone who looks shady for any reason or has a history of not doing quality work. You will be creating the best cabinet of curiosities you can for one partner. Thanks for reading. |
