Description:

I live in a rural area and unfortunately the only place that carries DMC embroidery floss is Wal-mart.

I hated going there to get my DMC floss, but the only other option was to drive 30 miles to the closest craft/sewing store.

Now, Wal-mart has quit carrying DMC floss and cross-stitch supplies. So, now I am forced to drive the 30 miles.

After my last trip, I thought why not make a swap for all those people that no longer can get their floss from the Wal-bandit. Wouldn't it be great to send and receive 20 skeins of floss to pad our collections?

So, here it is:

Send 10 skeins each of DMC embroidery floss to 2 partners. No requests for specific colors This swap is to add to or even maybe get an extra of your existing stash. Maybe, if you're like me, it will keep you from having to make a journey for one color. :-) No doubles. Just pickup 10 different colors and pop them into a regular envelope. They are light and will probably take only one stamp. Two at the most!

Now for the business:

Must have a rating of 4.9. No "no-sends" in the past 90 days.If you have a rating, must have at least 3 "real" mailed swaps. Newbies welcome with a full profile. I will be checking all profiles the day before swap close and any questionable swappers or newbies not following the above will be banned.

This is a very inexpensive swap to buy and to send, so it is international. And for the international swappers...If you don't have access to DMC brand specifically, any comparable brand is great! (I received an amazing skein from Australia and loved it!)

Receive a 5 if you send 10 different skeins of DMC floss to each of 2 partners.

Receive a heart if you send along a chart, extra floss, some aida/fabric to cross-stitch on, or maybe your partner uses floss for ATC's or bracelets and you send along extras for their craft of choice. Let's make this fun and without any drama. If necessary, I will angel.

I can't join any more swaps or my hubby will be made at me, but just thought I'd mention a place to buy them on-line...

I know what you mean about having to drive far to get things! I live 20 minutes from any real shopping, and that town is limited too, if the one craft store in the next town over doesn't have anything I have to drive about an hour to get to the next area with a decent craft store!

jessica 01/ 4/2008 #

does it have to be dmc? because I swewar everywhere here has stopped selling it.

GypsyDyann 01/ 4/2008 #

There is always Ebay--I sware you can find ANYTHING on there and of course the other catalog places like Annies Attic etc. But it's a PIT not being able to run down to the store for something when you are in the middle of a project. Also live with NO crafts store but Wallysworld and that section got smaller when we went Superstore. And MY closest crafts store is also 30 minutes away---I got a feeling OREON and I live in the SAME town! SMALL WORLD! :)

Caam 01/ 4/2008 #

I have more floss than I can use, but I do have to add my 2 cents on Wally world and craft supplies. We are thinking of moving to a town that has no knitting supply stores. I went into the behemoth to check and their yarn selection sucks! Not a natural fiber to be found. Anywhere. And now you tell me they are not even selling floss????

oreon 01/ 4/2008 #

Yeah. No floss at Wally's anymore. :-( It doesn't have to be DMC. Any floss would be great! Thanks for responses. I'm glad that I'm not the only one upset about this!

NicolaO 01/ 4/2008 #

http://www.123stitch.com/ is a great site for cross-stitch stuff.

Momwithahook 01/ 4/2008 #

Hey, having just quit wally world last Nov. they are phasing out all their crafty sections. No more sewing/fabric. really cheap and eyelashy yarns . Also, the yarns at one particular store might only be throw backs from another store that couldn't sell it. Wally is scaling back for a number of reasons and trying really hard to break into the Big electronic ticket items. (sorry to hijack your thread)

girthta 01/ 4/2008 #

I don't yet use enough floss for this swap to help me, but I threw a KING SIZED FIT the day I went to Wally to get a bunch of floss for a GS project/class I was teaching and they had NONE. Went all the way to the manager and everything.

Maybe that's why they won't let us sell cookies there??? HAHAHAHA!!!! les fuckres

xing5683 01/ 4/2008 #

FYI!

I just went to one of my many local wal-marts and they have floss marked down to $.10 a skein. The cashier didn't even want to count all of the ones that I had picked out so I got a steal of a deal.

Some stores have more of a selection than others at this point but I found atleast 100 different colors there.

jessica 01/ 5/2008 #

I hope they don't get rid of the fabric. The remnants are at awesome prices. And they have yarn 2/3 the price of joanns & michaels.

oreon 01/ 5/2008 #

Our Wal-mart is already winnowing their fabric dept. I guess my next swap will be "Wal-mart hates the sew-smart" LOL

xing5683 01/ 5/2008 #

I went to the newest WM in my area and there is no craft dept. They still have scrapbooking supplies and wedding junk, but that's it. all of the rest of the space is party supplies.

oreon 01/ 6/2008 #

Party supplies?!?!?!?!?! Just another reason to protest shopping @ Wal-Mart.

cobaltgypsy 01/ 6/2008 #

OMG! My hubby and I stopped shopping at Wal-Mart in 2002. My mother, my sister and I all worked for them at one time or another--used and abused by Wal-Mart, I like to say, as my mother is partially disabled as the result of getting hurt on the job at Wal-Mart. (A metal stock-room shelving unit loaded with televisions and boxes fell over on top of her. It wasn't until she hired a lawyer that Wal-Mart agreed to pay her medical bills and worker's comp, even though she'd been an employee there for 14 years.) Anyway, I told my hubby that I had to sign up for this swap first to protest Wallyworld and second: because I love to do counted cross-stitch and needlepoint! Thanks for this wonderful protest-swap! :)

oreon 01/ 7/2008 #

What a horrible situation!

Thanks for joining our swap! Fight the Power!

biasbabe 01/ 8/2008 #

I can't believe they would cut out the fabric from Walmart, Don't these people know that sewing is a dying art. At least I live 20 miles from three different Super Walmarts and they can't keep up with the fabric, because Joann Fabrics is expensive around here. Glad to meet all of you. Hope to do this again. Hugs everyone.

xing5683 01/11/2008 #

I am going to go to the new wal-mart style and take pictures so everyone can see what they will look like soon. It really is incredibly sad. Fortunately I have other places I can shop but I know what its like to live in the middle of no where and only have them for shopping. Its really unbelievable (and yet believable) what they are doing.

oreon 01/12/2008 #

It is! So, now it's even harder to be a "crafter" :-( But, that's alright b/c we have a community here to support and exchange with others of like mind! Thanks to everyone who has joined so far and especially to all the people who have contacted me privately or publicly with their support. What a wonderful place and such amazing people!

catsmeow 01/12/2008 #

I have a ton of floss, but I very rarely use it anymore so I don't need any, but I would be glad to angel for anyone not receiving theirs. Or if anyone is in need of some floss for this swap, contact me. Glenna

zebra3175 01/15/2008 #

Would be great if we could get it for $.10 here! I think its about $.99. Either way, Im in. Sounds like a great idea for a swap. Might get me finally doing my fairy cross stitch I bought for my daughter over a year ago. I just have to get my own thread, but its all too much like hard work. :)

Ceinwyn 01/17/2008 #

Hello everyone. I am a newbie here and to swapping in general, so please forgive any "stupid" question I might ask. I joined the swap but to make sure I understand it correctly (English not being my mother tongue) : a skein is the lengthly bundle of 6 threads as it is sold by DMC, with the two little paper wrapped around? I wouldn't want to disappoint my swapping partner, because I misunderstood the requisites. Just another question : do the skein have to be new or is a skein of which one or two lengths have been used OK also? Thanks for the reply.

oreon 01/18/2008 #

The question about the skein type is correct. The six strands with the 2 papers around is the right type, whether DMC brand or not. As for whether used is OK, that would be up to your partner. When partners are assigned, contact them. I don't see why not. It would be fine with me!

MAT 01/22/2008 #

Count me in. I am in the same situation and also have to drive 30 to 45 minutes to a Michael's etc. to get my supplies now. I am in the craft business and with them cutting down on crafts and fabric it is killing my botton line. I also worked for them for over 18 years and when I became disabled they would not try to find a place for me because I cannot lift over 5 pounds. I took a years medical leave and then retired the day after my 62nd birthday. So much for loyalty. Wal-mart was great when I went to work for them, but the company has gone to pot!!!!

xing5683 01/27/2008 #

I finally got around to taking pictures. As much as I hate going to WM I really hate heading to this one. Check the pics out on flickr.

I dont cross stitch anymore, but I still use the floss for different things because it is stronger. I live in a small town where the only store is Wal-mart and they too are phasing out there craft dept. Floss was marked down to 10 cents and it was gone in no time. Everything to do with crafting in almost gone. I have to drive 30 to 40 minutes to have a selection but at least if I do I have a choice of Michaels, Joanns, or Hobby lobby. Just don't like the drive or the traffic.

TraySeeH 01/29/2008 #

You don't have to use my profile for color choices b/c I use the floss for different crafts, so send whatever colors you like.

oreon 01/31/2008 #

Holy Snikes, xing! Your Wally's is even worse than mine! That really stinks! I feel for you.

xing5683 01/31/2008 #

Fortunately, I live in a metro area so I have other options, but I know what it's like to live in the middle of no where. I wouldn't know what to do if that was my only WM.

xing5683 01/31/2008 #

If you are my partner and need ideas on floss that I don't have, I have a pdf that I can send over to you. Honestly though, surprises work best.

bluehairedmary 02/ 1/2008 #

I use the floss for embroidery these days... if you look at my Flickr page you can see a few of the things I've done lately. I guess any colors except red and black (I've stocked up on those already). I love embroidery floss!

niecedenise 02/ 2/2008 #

I worked for old WM for 12 years. The WM in Fl. at my friends has decided to keep the fabric dept at least for now. So many people called the home office and wrote to protest that they decided it was in their best interest to keep it. No DMC though, that was corporate wide. The workers cant do anything but as customers we can b-----.
