Description:

Hello fellow ephemera lovers -

I'm addicted to handmade envelopes right now and can't look at anything flat without imagining what a cool envie it would make!

For this swap, we will make envelopes out of ephemera that wasn't intended to be an envelope in the first place. The only thing you cannot use to make your envies is scrapbook paper (because that's too obvious), and actual paper that was meant to be written on (like notebook paper, stationery, printer paper, etc.)

We'll make 5 envelopes for each of our 2 partners. The envies must be made by 5 different pieces of ephemera. So you can make all 5 envelopes from maps, but they must be 5 different maps. They can be all the same size or all different size/style, but I'm sure this will depend on the size of the items you make the envies from. Oh, and 4 of the 5 envelopes must be mailable-sized; only one can be 3x5" or smaller. (They can all be mailable-sized if you want.)

Examples of what you can use:

  • book pages - foreign, vintage, children's, textbooks
  • printed shopping bags
  • maps - nat'l geographic, atlas, road maps, tourist maps
  • vintage sewing pattern envelopes
  • food boxes (thin enough to be creased & folded)
  • neat wrapping paper
  • magazine covers
  • food to-go menus
  • travel brouchures
  • a former envelope - like a business envelope (with the pattern inside) turned inside-out to make a different envelope or a priority or airmail envelope, also turned inside-out and re-purposed into another, different envelope
  • vintage ledger paper or sales slips

Please cut & seal the edges neatly with glue or double-sided tape; no tape on the outside.

Feel free to post ideas below that I haven't listed. You may also sew any of the above pieces together to make an envelope. Very impressive if you've got those skills!

Need some envelope templates? Check this out or this or this.

In a nutshell:

  • 5 envelopes to each of 2 partners, for a total of 10
  • no scrapbook, writing or printer paper
  • made from 5 different pieces of ephemera
  • 4 of 5 must be mailable-sized
  • no tape on the outside
  • vintage ephemera is allowed!

A week to sign-up & a week to send, since its not a profile-specific swap. Usual group rules apply; I'll check profiles before assigning partners. PM me with any questions!
