Description:

This is an art swap in the 4x4 size -- similar to atc's but with a slightly larger space to work with. If you google "art squared" you can find more information. You can collage, paint, draw, etc. as long as it is in keeping with a vintage theme. You will make two original 4x4's and send one to each of your partners. If you have a rating below 3.5 or don't have your profile filled out then please don't sign up -- I will be checking before the deadline.

Is there a preferred background? I've been using watercolor paper for my ATCs and have just started canvas panels. Carolyn

Hi Carolyn -- As far as backgrounds, anything that is sturdy enough for atc's should work well for 4x4's as well. As long as it supports your work (since I do collage I tend to use a bit thicker base) and holds up to people handling/viewing it :-)

Thanks, I'm looking forward to this swap. I am so hooked.

What about new people? I am new to Swap-Bot, but not new to swapping or this type of art. I would really like to participate in this swap. :)

OOOh will you people stop putting these interesting and thought provoking things up for the undisciplined folk in 'cyber ether'........like ME to see!!!! Naturally, I HAVE to have a try with this format now, cos straight way my head is buzzing with ideas.....and I work through the day so can only do these things at night and I am losing sleep here!!! But what fun!!!! And to be fair it keeps this middle aged woman off the streets, so mankind has much to be thankful for. :) Okay Im in.... but am I right, it seems I dont need to send it within a frame which would increase the postage overseas ? The art squared article implied as much. I would use our mount board, your matt baord I believe, that would be okay? Lyn

Hi Serene-serenade -- new members are welcome, as long as you have a profile filled out. Welcome :-)

And Lyn -- no frame is needed and matt board or something similiar is just fine. I got really hooked on the format a while ago and it's such fun :-)

Just so I make my partners happy -- what do we consider "vintage"? Are we looking at pre-1960s, or earlier than that? Immediately in my mind I think earlier, but for some people the 1970s are now vintage...

Input, advice, suggestions?

purplewhimsy 11/25/2006 #

Can anyone point me to some online examples of vintage? I'd love to join, but not sure what vintage is. Thanks.

Coffeelatte 11/27/2006 #

Vintage to me is anything from times past -- I tend to think anything prior to the 1960s is vintage...but that's me. I know some people call styles from the 1960s and 1970s vintage. So I guess vintage representations could range from ladies in corsets, to flappers or girls in poodle skirts. Or maybe from horse-drawn carriages to Model T's & Mustangs.

What I'm wondering is whether partners for this swap are looking for more for "Charles Dickens" or "Austin Powers". Or do you care?

I think vintage is open to interpretation, make art that you enjoy and that you think someone else would enjoy and have fun with it :-) I tend towards victorian images but I'm a history major and that's the era I study :-)

Michi lol its great thanks so much ! So glad you are enjoying making things, it is lovely isnt it to be in contact in such a therapeutic way!...with such clever and inspiring and smart and nice and well the list goes on lolol people! Best to put your name and email addy or swap bot name on the back somewhere, or hang it off the side as a label maybe, so I can look back in years to come, when my memory is failing ( even more!) and recall who sent it to me! cough........now what were we talking about again? :)

I will be mailing mine off tomorrow. Things are calming down a bit more around my house. I did email both of my partners to let them know about the situation. Just in case they didn't get my email I'm posting here too. Donnaj

Coffeelatte 12/30/2006 #

Linie...I wouldn't worry yet. I sent a package off to the UK more than three weeks ago and it hasn't arrived yet. Holiday back-log...
