Description:

Anima sola....(the lone soul) is one who has no family left on earth to remember and honor him.

I was inspired to host this swap based on an art exhibit I heard about in San Diego, CA (2011) called "Remembering the Innocents". It was a Dia de los Muertos art exhibit that paid homage to the murdered women of Juarez; migrants who have died crossing the US/Mexico border and the innocent people who have been killed in Mexico's narco wars.

For this swap, create a shrine that you would love to add to your ofrenda to honor la anima sola. This is not meant to glorify the horror of death, but rather to honor the life of someone who may have no one who can celebrate their life. Everyone was a daughter, son, mother, father, or loved one to somebody.

FUN STUFF: Create a shrine to honor la anima sola. You may use any theme you choose, however, no Halloween gore for this swap. You can use the flames of purgatory in your design or not, it's up to you.

NOT SO FUN STUFF: No late sends, rate fairly & promptly, and do your best work.

I just told my husband about this swap and the meaning behind it. He said, "Don't get too emotional with it..." I guess he knows me well because I get emotional just thinking about "anima sola". Thanks, Lu, and glad you're back!!

I get a little teary eyed myself...especially with the theme I'm using...have to keep reminding myself that it's to celebrate a life!

When I was in Mexico as a college student, I traveled during the Day of the Dead "season." Nearly every public ofrenda exhibit we visited on our trip had several shrines devoted to forgotten souls or a public health or safety concern -- cancer, AIDS, domestic violence, alcoholism, child abuse, border crossing issues ... They were often made by student groups and were very moving. I guess they must have been "anima sola" ofrendas -- thanks for giving me a term for them!

Are there restrictions as to how we set up a shrine? Can it take any form? Could it be a package of elements to use in setting up an ofrenda to honor animas solas?

@rngstgstll ..sending you a pm, but for purposes of this swap it is to be a completed shrine, not just elements for your partner to create their own.

I'm wondering what size mine should be... Any guidelines or preferences? I'm hoping to start on mine today. I was just getting ready to draw and paint a background piece for mine, when it occured to me that it might be a good idea to check any size guidelines. ;)

There is no size restriction on this swap...just be creative have fun and do your best work:)

To say I am enjoying this swap sounds not quite appropriate. But it is deeply thoughtful and deeply peaceful....and sad. Thank you SO much for hosting this! I have been layering and letting things dry, doing one side, then another, then another. It really IS going to be hard to say good-bye to my shrine when I send it off. I hope my partner likes it and doesn't think it is too ... somber.
