Description:

I was thinking how much fun it would be to construct a quilt with different blocks that we would do on a monthly basis. So this swap will be #1 in the series of quilt blocks that we will make and share with our partners. (Please note that the size of the block changed from the one we did last month at the request of the participants)

We all love quilting and I'm sure would all love receiving a different block each month that we could then put into a complete quilt at some point next year depending on the size of quilt you wish to make. I think that would make a lovely quilt to be admired.

The swap will consist of senders choice of colors on the "Flying Dutchman" block pattern so you can start working on your block right away.

The size of the block you will make will be 12.5" x 12.5" so that when it's finished and put into the quilt, the blocks will be 12"x12".

Please do your best work and make something you'd love to receive. I will host a different block pattern each month so don't forget to come back and check out the next month. You can start in the series at any time. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Only partners with a rating of 4.95 will be allowed to swap. No flaking please.

I could sure use some help with my postings on the above...i don't know how to do BOLD text, and I don't know how to place a link for people to go to for help with the patterns. if anyone would be so kind as to help me with that i would love it! Thanks.

ALSO, I'm sorry about the shorter time this month. I will be posting earlier next time and perhaps put several months up at one time. That way you can all go ahead and be working on your blocks prior to the swap deadline. Thank you all for participating in the swaps...I love this group.

This video shows a no waste FAST method to make the flying gees for this block!

Great video!

Are we to use 2 or 3 different fabrics? Great video

slewis234 02/ 7/2014 #

I believe 3 would be correct. You could use 2 prints and a solid or as in the block example it uses 3 prints. Its very pretty that way I think. And please note the size was changed this time. Thanks all.

I'm not sure who added the link but thank you so much. I really would love to know how to do that. Thanks so much.

I think there is an error in the patters linked above (as well as the one on the McCalls youtube video--don't we want the block to have a 12 1/2"x 12 1/2" square size to allow for the seam allowance to finish up at 12"?

If so the measurements need an additional 1/2" on the large square.

I wasted a lot of fabric trying to make a 12 1/2" block, thinking I'd made mistakes in my cutting.

The large square should be 6.5" + 1.25" which is 7.75 (7 3/4" sq.) The smaller squares are ok at 3 7/8".

@slewis to add a clickable link you just type it out like this:

[the name of the link]x (http://www.swap-bot.com)

leave out the space (the "x") and it will be an active link. To include a picture, it's similar: ![]x(the url of the image) leaving out the "x" space

the pic has to be stored online somewhere, or if you click on an image online and view image, that will set it out there with it's own independant URL in the address line that you can copy for the link.

For example: ![]x(http://www.quilting-in-america.com/images/Tn-quilt-block-dutchmans-puzzle.jpg)

leaving out the space/x gets you this:

typo error: " or if you click on an image online and view image"

I meant RIGHT-CLICK on an image

Thankyou honey so much for the tutorial and for catching the error. I'm sorry it meant using up some fabric. Maybe you can use the little pieces like I do sometimes and make little lavender sachet bags. It turns a bad thing into a sweet thing! Thank you for all your help. Its deeply appreciated.

Can't wait to assign partners.

I'll make some pin cushions with any small stuff, but I have now two Flying Dutchman blocks, just too small for my regular 12" block quilts, that I can just add to my scrappy sampler quilt top one day--I can always make something out of nothing.

EEK! I made yet another bad one! Apparently the smaller squares also have to be a little bigger to account for the extra 1/2" for seam allowance This is what I got by leaving the 3 7/8 squares:

Is anyone else having these troubles?

twobluecrows 02/11/2014 #

4 1/4" squares may work for the small squares. I'll be trying it tomorrow. Wish me luck.

twobluecrows 02/15/2014 #

I did it! Finally! 4 3/8" squares for the small ones worked great. I had to do seal allowances just a bit more then 1/4" to make the points all come right, but it worked and I had a successful, nice looking block finally! So: 7 3/4" large squares, and 4 3/8" small ones do the trick.
