Description:

Since there is a Europe-only Valentine Magic Yarn Ball swap, here's one for the US & Canada only.

***You must have a trader rating of at least 4 to take part. Newbies who have not been rated are welcome to sign up. ***You must have completed your Swap-bot profile to take part.

You'll have one partner, and should mail by February 5th to make sure your partner receives their magic yarn ball in time for Valentines day. If you are mailing outside your home country, please keep in mind that the mail may take longer to reach it's destination.

To make a magic yarn ball, you'll need a new ball of non-acrylic yarn (wool, cotton, silk or a combination of natural fibers.) Over the next few weeks collect all sorts of trinkets -- tiny hearts, cherubs or other items that remind you of Valentine's Day. You are also welcome to check your partner's profile to see what he/she likes and add some trinkets that they will specially enjoy.

To make your yarn ball, start with one end and wind it around your first trinket. Wrap each trinket inside the ball -- in the end it's going to be a little lumpy and lopsided. When all the trinkets are hidden inside (or peeking out a bit), dress it up with a bow or other ornament. The fun at the other end comes when your swap partner unwraps the yarn ball to find all those surprises are inside!

Rules: 1 - NO acrylic yarn. Use a whole ball and where possible include the label from the ball showing what the yarn is made from. 2 - Contents should value approx $10-$15 USD before the cost of the yarn, and exclusive of postage. 3 - Vintage and gently used thrifted items are fine, as long as they are in good condition. Handmade items are also fine (with the exception of food -- please do not send home-made foods.) Be sure you send things you would like to receive -- otherwise you are wasting your money and your partner may be disappointed.

***PARTICIPANTS, if there are items that you absolutely do not want to receive, please make comments on this swap thread specifying what those are. For example: "I do not want to receive chocolate."

I was serious...I don't really like chocolate, so please don't send that to me (I know I am strange...) I also REALLY do not like flavored coffees.

funkykchicken 12/28/2006 #

I donot like the following so would prefer not to receive it. White Chocolate Hello Kitty Overtly Cutesy Stickers (i have 50 rolls of them) Pink (i detest the color pink)

What i do like

Anything Vintage Blue(my favorite color) Handmade items Im really not that picky i will appreciate whatever i get.Im looking forward to this sounds like fun.

knitster 12/28/2006 #

Thanks for starting this coffelatte. I saw the Europe one and I am glad that you started another one for the rest of us.

knitwillis 12/29/2006 #

The only stipulation I have is no wool (especially chunky). I have breathing problems from it. I do okay with wool sock yarn that is fingering weight. There aren't any colors I don't like. I love bright things :)

Coffeelatte 12/31/2006 #

Willow Tree - I really like how you took the opportunity to expand on the standard Swap-bot slots for your profile! Glad to get to know you!

WillowTree21 01/ 1/2007 #

Eeek! Ditto and thank you Coffeelatte. I think I have read your profile at least twice. The more I read profiles the more I add to mine, LOL, in hopes it will help those with ideas! Not only that, I just like to share ;) ::wink::

I am glad I stumbled across Swap-bot, I look everyday now. I act like an excited little girl. Giggle snort!

Happy New Year E1! Rebecca

Coffeelatte 01/ 3/2007 #

I can tell you, it pays to do those long profiles...I've been blessed to have generous swap partners here on Swap-bot who sent me things that have delighted me!

robayre 01/ 4/2007 #

Hi, my name is Robyn. This is my first swap-bot swap, I'm so excited! This is going to be such a fun swap to create and to receive, I can't wait.

To whomever receives my name, I'd just like to request no sweets. My profile has lots of info about me, so please check it out.

Thanks Coffeelatte, for the great swap!

user5534 01/ 4/2007 #

This is my first swap bot swap as well, but I've done a very similar swap on other boards in the past and loved it!

I would like to ask to not receive food or coffee, I love both but am nursing and had to give many things up (dairy, chocolate and coffee).

I can't wait to shop for my partner!

AngrySpinner 01/ 5/2007 #

Thank you, CoffeeLatte for organizing this swap. Like AmyandPaul, I saw the Europe-only magic ball and was bummed. This is my first swap-bot swap, and my second swap (I'm in the middle of Spin2Knit's swap and just sent my first package of two off yesterday).

I like reds and greens (usually separate), knit a lot of socks, drink a lot of coffee, and am looking forward to this swap.

Coffeelatte 01/ 6/2007 #

Robyn - Were you REALLY hatched from a Kinder Suprise Egg? My friend loves those so much, and tried to have some sent down from Canada, but they were confiscated at customs...I found some this Christmas at a local store and bought a few for her, but they were all gone by the time she got back to try and snatch 'em all...so I figure, if you might have contacts for more???

Welcome to Swap-bot, newcomers! I just started swapping her this past year, and it's been so much fun so far!

user4534 01/ 6/2007 #
  • I love handspun yarns :D

  • Dislike pink (some pink is ok, but not if it's predominant) and no overly bright colors

  • Muted or heathered pallet is more of my fav

  • As for food stuff, no hard candy, or coffee.

  • I did a whole long list of swap Q & As in my blog, there's a link in my profile :).

Susi 01/ 6/2007 #

I am so intriqued about this swap, but am just not sure what I can put in the "magic" yarn ball. Can it be like a box of candy hearts, stickers, stamped omages, give some ideas please. My daughter works at jonns so maybe I could get some ideas there! I'm going to try it, I hope I do all right! susi

Coffeelatte 01/ 7/2007 #

Susi - When I sent my Christmas-time yarn ball, I put in things like some little ornaments, a bell, a tiny box of candy, stickers, & glass buttons. I think I also rolled up a pair of stripey socks and wrapped them in the yarn. Anything that you can bend/tuck/wedge into the yarn ball would owrk. You're on the right track!

momoko 01/ 9/2007 #

Hello,

This is my first swap on Swap-Bot and I am excited to participate! This swap made me want to sign up.

I like pretty much everything - chocolate, stickers, whatever. My favorite colors are turquoise, blue, red or pink. I'm not that fond of green shades, orange or yellow.

WillowTree21 01/14/2007 #

Hello everyone, I have read peoples profiles and what was witten here. I went in search of things for my yarn ball .. and due to the "I don't likes" people have ... I dodged Pink (ok theres strace amounts -don't CSI me), Chocolates, wool for sure ( cindiluhu4u has allergies), and coffee's (baby cant have them). However, I did pick up a little box of candys but thats tradition! :) I live in a small town, so when I get to go to the next city, an hour away, I do shop then. Can't wait to see who my partner will be =)

user5249 01/14/2007 #

hi everyone! i cant wait for this swap. i am easy to please:)

AngrySpinner 01/17/2007 #

WillowTree21 01/18/2007 #

Angry Spinner, I got your magic yarn ball today! I told myself I had to crochet to get to the inside ... Well,.... Give me a few days to post pictures to the flickr page an you'll see what happened LOL :)

Thanks a Bunch Love from Me, Willow Tree

AngrySpinner 01/19/2007 #

Question: When I get my magic ball, how do I give my swap partner her rating? --Jen

WillowTree21 01/19/2007 #

They say you will be able to post ten days after the "date must be sent by". :)

Coffeelatte 01/21/2007 #

Yes - That is right. The rating option will appear after the swap mail date.

AngrySpinner 01/22/2007 #

Willow Tree, you take some gorgeous pictures. :-)) I saw my box to you on the Flickr page, and it's far more beautiful in your photos than it was in person.

--Jen aka Angry Spinner

knitster 01/22/2007 #

I went ahead and marked my yarn ball as sent, but it will not go to the post office untill tommorrow morning. I have had a family death, and will be leaving town so I don't know when I will be back or when I will get to use a computer. Hope you like your yarn ball Dee!

Coffeelatte 01/23/2007 #

Amy - I am sorry you've had a death in the family. I'll watch for your return on the swap & scrap pages...

Willow Tree - Love the photos in your Flickr photo stream!

WillowTree21 01/24/2007 #

Thank you :) Both Jen and Coffeelatte. Jury Duty has me beat right now ... I feel so behind :(

I am so sorry AmyandPaul for your loss. Peace is not on the outside, but within the soul. May Peace be with you and your family. <3

Susi 01/24/2007 #

Kaitlin, your yarn ball will go postal tomorrow. Just thought I'd let you know! susi

knitster 01/25/2007 #

Thanks for all your kind words. I am back home now. It was my great-grandmother that passed. She was 95 years old, so she lived a long happy life. Coffeelatee...I also sent out my love swap when the yarn ball went out...did you see the pic yet? You know the love theme is my favorite and I think I went a little overboard...lol.

user4534 01/27/2007 #

Got mine from Ellen today, thanks Ellen! I haven't yet unwound it, but will :) I'll post pics of before and after in my flickr when I get them taken.

WillowTree21 01/28/2007 #

Uploaded two photos, sorry they are so big. I will ask Tony what I need to do to make them smaller.

momoko 01/28/2007 #

I got my package from Willow Tree on Friday and it is fantastic! Thanks so much! I'll upload pictures once I figure out how.

WillowTree21 01/28/2007 #

Ohhh thank goodness! I'm so glad you got it Leilani :) I uploaded a picture of the outside, but I failed to take one of the contents, I can't wait to see your photos! :) You made me happy <3

momoko 02/ 2/2007 #

I finally uploaded a picture. Some of it may be hard to see - but there was so much stuff! Thanks again Willow Tree - it was a great surprise. I've been disappointed from swaps (on other sites) before.

Coffeelatte 02/ 4/2007 #

Well, swappers...we look to be 100% sent except for one sign-up who was "new" when we started but now has racked up a lot of no-sends...and I'm sending out a package to her partner on Monday.

Thanks for participating. Please be sure to let your partner know when you've received your yarn ball...and look to start rating in approximately 10 days. If your partner is sending from out of your home country, remember that the package may take longer than 10 days to arrive. I suggest that if there are delays you start by sending a message to your partner to confirm when the package was sent...

Happy Valentines' Day!

WillowTree21 02/ 4/2007 #

This is sad! Coffeelatte, if you need help sending something to the one who had "muse" let me know e-mail. I might be able to send something small. ;)

Willow Tree

knitster 02/ 5/2007 #

AngrySpinner 02/ 6/2007 #

I got my ball! Hurray! What fun! I can't seem to figure out which user name goes with B. Leak . . . so thank you, B., whoever you are! :-) --Jen aka Angry Spinner

cutecake 02/ 6/2007 #

Thank you so much Susi, I love it! Sorry I didn't post to thank you sooner.

AngrySpinner 02/ 6/2007 #

Mea Culpa! B. Leet, I'm sorry I messed up your name! Thank you again, B. :-) --Jen aka Angry Spinner

user5640 02/ 6/2007 #

To Jen aka Angry Spinner (may I ask why you are angry?)

I am a dork. I fully intended to include a little note saying hi, I'm Becca, aka fraxillina, hope you like what's inside the ball, I almost kept some of the things myself :) and so forth. Then life intervened and I managed to send off the box without the note. No wonder you're confused! Anyway, I do hope you enjoy your magic yarn ball. Oh, there's something in the center of the ball which i have more of if you want it. Anyway, have fun!

AngrySpinner 02/ 7/2007 #

My fledgling handspun yarn company is "Fiber in the Hands of an Angry Spinner" which is a shout out to Jonathan Edwards and my childhood growing up with Calvinists. (Jon Edwards' famous sermon is "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God"--and I thought "Spinner in the Hands of an Angry Blog" would be funny and different). Also, with all the spinners I know, "Angry" is almost never an adjective I'd use.

I loved the fiber in the middle, and would love more of it!

--Jen aka Angry Spinner (but not really particularly angry, though I have a bit of a headache today) :-)

user4688 02/ 7/2007 #

user4688 02/ 7/2007 #

Oops! I forgot! Love Snoppy!!!

knitster 02/ 8/2007 #

Coffeelatte: I got a wonderful yarn ball from Kaitlin, and I wanted to rate her, but I don't see the link to rate my partner yet. Am I too late? I just got it the other day. Please help! :)

knitster 02/ 8/2007 #

nevermind, just found it, must have been looking at the wrong page.

simplysarah 02/11/2007 #

user4688 02/12/2007 #

Simply sarah,

DeeBee 02/13/2007 #

I haven't received anything yet, and it's way past the date. Who was I supposed to receive from? I sent mine, and had so much fun doing it. Hope my partner loves what I sent. But still, sure would like to receive something....

simplysarah 02/13/2007 #

Gina! I havent been home this weekend and wont be home until thusday, but my roomies usaually will pick up parcels for me... and I know that sometimes it take abit longer with mail from canada.... thanks for lettin me know...

piece sarah

Coffeelatte 02/15/2007 #

Remember if your partner lives outside your home country it can take longer than 10 days to work through the mail.

You are now able to access the "rate your partner" information, and I would strongly suggest that before you rate you contact your partner and see when they sent before rating.

Jaichan 02/25/2007 #

Thank you so much for being my angel, Coffeelatte! I loved everything.

DeeBee 02/25/2007 #

Wow - I STILL don\'t have anything....

DeeBee 03/14/2007 #

WOW again - only this time - WOW, how long does it take the PO to send a package??? I got my swap TODAY, March 14, and the date it was sent was January 23. Where has it been for 7 weeks? The PO has GOT to do better than that. Anyway, I got my swap, and I love everything in it. THANKS AMY!!
