Swap Info:

Looking to try a book in a new-to-you genre? Or looking for an excuse to read a book off your Mt. To Be Read? Every month, we'll explore a different genre by reading a single book and sharing our thoughts with our partner. April's genre is Young Adult Fiction. Whether you're new to the YA fiction scene or just using this swap to read one you've had your eye on for a long time, this is the swap for you.

Genre Definition:

(Wikipedia) Young-adult fiction or young adult literature (often abbreviated as YA), also juvenile fiction, is fiction written, published, or marketed to adolescents and young adults, although recent studies show that 55% of young-adult fiction is purchased by readers over 18 years of age...Authors and readers of young adult (YA) novels often define the genre as literature as traditionally written for ages ranging from sixteen years up to the age of twenty-five, while Teen Fiction is written for the ages of ten and to fifteen....The subject matter and story lines of YA literature are typically consistent with the age and experience of the main character.

Swap Instructions:

Choose any YA book and read it! There are tons of online suggestion guides that might help. I'll list some favorites of the CL mods here at the end of this post to get you started.

Send an email or swap-bot message to your partners with the following info:

  • Title & author of the book you read
  • Why did you choose this book?
  • A brief summary of the book
  • A brief review--what did you think of it?
  • Your experience with the genre (have you read a lot? a little? was this your first?)
  • Your thoughts about the genre overall and if this book was a good representation of it
  • Would you read more of this genre in the future?

Some suggestions from your group mods:

  • The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
  • All our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrell
  • Ashfall series by Mike Mullin
  • The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
  • Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare
  • Delirium series by Lauren Oliver
  • Divergent by Veronica Roth
  • Every Day by David Levithan
  • The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
  • A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray
  • Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
  • Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer
  • Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
  • Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
  • Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

These are just suggestions, in case you need suggestions. Feel free to choose a book from this list or from anywhere else as long as it could be considered young adult.
