May Field Journal

First, find a little notebook. It can be commercial or handmade. It can be lined or blank. It can be spiral-bound or cloth bound. Basically, it can be whatever you like, depending on how ambitious you are. :) I am okay with a store-bought Staples notebook, but feel free to use whatever makes you happy.

Second, for the month of May, try to keep track of what six- and eight-legged creatures you see. Note them in your journal. If you want to add illustrations, photos, etc, that is a bonus. The minimum entry, however, should have the date, the insect (or other crawly), and the general habitat.

I.e, "May 5, 2015: spotted a club-tailed dragonfly at dawn laying eggs in the fish pond." Or "May 12, 2015: spotted weird fly, approximately 1/8" length, green body and opaque wings, sitting on windshield of my car."

Feel free to be detailed (or not) in your description. Once you note a particular critter, you don't have to note it again, unless you want to assign a page per bug and note multiple sightings over the month. Again, I will leave that up to you. But each new and unique (for the month) sighting should have an entry.

If you are accomplished enough, and you want to try to figure out the exact scientific name of your visitor, even better, but not necessary. Sometimes, they come and go too quickly and don't leave time for introductions!

Embellish (or not) as your heart desires.

Finally, mail that journal off to your fellow entomophile. :)
