Description:

I was hesitant at first. My mother had told me it was wrong. The very idea seemed outrageous, sacrilegious even. But I did it anyway, and I loved it. Hopefully, so will you! That's right folks, I'm talking about cutting up a book. This swap will provide you with the raw materials to do just that - a book! You will each go to a second-hand bookstore and buy a vintage illustrated book which you will then mail to your swap partner. The book should be something that would be interesting to cut up and use in art. Some examples of what I mean: an old schoolbook from the 40's. A field guide of poisonous mushrooms. A collection of Russian Fairy-tales. A cookbook. An instruction manual for a record player.
You get the idea. Something with a combination of pictures and text that will make your partner eager to get the scissors out, cut the pages and make art. If you live in a non-English speaking country, you could send a book of poetry in your language. The absolute maximum to spend is 5$ before shipping. This is not about the amount you spend but about the thought and effort you invest in finding a great find. If you find something appropriate just lying around at home, that's fine. The book can be falling apart. The rules: No unexplained no-sends, rating of at least 4.5. Newbies welcome, but must participate in at least one successful and rated swap before joining, and have a profile filled out to my satisfaction. I reserve the right to ban shady characters. Should the need arise, I will of course angel.

Seems like a waste. ='(

Seems like awesome. :) No more wasteful than sending any other papers for collage, and what you don't use can be recycled. I'll sign up as soon as I'm sure I have room in my schedule.

Sounds like fun! Wish I could have more than 20 swaps. If you do it again I will have to join.

Thing is, nobody buys all those old vintage 40s-70s children's books, etc...so they're PERFECT for art. I buy them all the time to use for my mail art. Great idea! :-)

Oh, this is so right!!!! You have to look at it this way, the first time you grabbed a crayon and scribbled on the page of a book you were altering it, the second time you took that crayon and added color you were an artist! When you ripped out pages in a frenzy, gurgling and drooling in excitment because the pictures were great and you were two years old and were exploring everything around you, you were an other Leonardo Da Vinci, a Picasso, a Monet. Reclaim that inner excitment! Eat that book! Oh, by the way, I love altered books...

Sounds a bit like the book Wreck this Journal by Keri Smith. Have you seen it. If you like this kind of book, you'll love wreck this journal! Just a fun tip!

If I get a US partner, (or if they have those internationally) anything with old geography or US History of famous Americans or Presidents or patriotic.. I am gathering items to work on making an altered book. Please and thank you! Otherwise anything is ok.
