Description: | |
This is a paint-and-stitch mixed media project. You have the option of hand stitching, machine sewing or a combination of both. Begin by cutting a piece of plain, cotton fabric, such as unbleached muslin, to 5 X 11 inches. Fold the top down (along the short side) and stitch in place to create a three-inch sleeve, making the flag surface 5 Ă— 8 inches. This sleeve will be the pocket you use to hang your flag on a string or decorative flag pole. Using a gelatin printing plate, apply paint to the front side of the flag. You can choose to use whatever colors you like, but please select at least two different colors to make an interesting print. If you find it easier to paint the fabric before cutting it to size and sewing the sleeve, feel free to do that. When the paint is dry, add stitching to the print to highlight shapes or the overall design. The last step is to embellish the flag. You can add words, charms, beads, decorative stitches, lace, Fun Fibers, fabric strips, stamped images, etc., but do not add organic materials such as sticks or seed pods if your partner lives in an area with mailing restrictions. Leave the edges of the flag unfinished. Include your username and swap information in the swap. Image borrowed from theprayerflagproject.blogspot.com |
