Description:

This is an ongoing swap for the Quilt Block Swap with a twist. This is the last month that i will be taking on any new arrivals. If you have not joined but would like to now and get in on the fun please do so.

This is for all you Fabric Artists out there. If you are new to making quilt blocks this will be a great start.

You will make 1 fabric quilt block 8 x8 for 1 swap partner. You can make the quilt block however you like. Here is the twist. If you crochet or knit you can still join.I read a very interesting article in a mag today. You would crochet or knit a quilt block and stitch the block to a muslim or fabric background. This makes for an interesting finished quilt block wouldn't you say.

If the swap generates enough interest we will do this every month until your quilt blocks will be big enough for a wall quilt to hang.

So come join in the fun.

Newbie and players with a 4.0 and no more then 1 no send welcome. If you have more then 1 no send please email me.International swap

I only have one problem. I go in for surgery to repair what I had done in Dec. I don't know what the recovery will be like. They told me better than the last, the last was anywhere from 3 to 6 mo. Anyway I am back to doing stuff I probably shouldn't be lol and that was 2 1/2 mo. after the surgery lol. Anyway I think what I may end up doing is making up a couple of blocks and pray that the receiver likes it and understands if it's not their favorite color's or something. Anyway my next surgery is sometime the end of June, beginning of July don't have a date yet. Yes I really want to continue this quilt block thing. Thanks for having me HeatherS-on flickr it's craftlover10101

glad to be here again -- I'll post again that i am requesting blues & greens for my colours -- like limes, aquas, forest, sea etc

can't wait to get a partner so i can make her soemthing special!

chrichri 04/ 5/2007 #

Hi guys,

I would like to join this swap but I have never made a quilt block before (well I have made a tied quilt blanket) but no patchwork as such. I really want to join but I do not want to disappoint my assigned partner because of my lack of experience. Could anyone point me to an instruction page or a quilt block they have made in the past so I know what is "expected"? I am a knitter as well so I guess I could knit a block but as a motivated sewer who wants to learn new techniques; I would love to do quilt blocks. A final note; do you normally piece your blocks by hand or with a sewing machine?

Thanks a lot, and sorry for the long post!

Christina

TerryF 04/ 5/2007 #

Please see my profile for preferred colours. Thx!

TerryF 04/ 5/2007 #

chrichri, some of the easiest blocks to try as a beginner are "strip pieced" - there is no pattern to follow so it doesn't matter if you don't get your seams exactly right (at 1/4"). Their charm lies in the fabric colours you choose and how you lay them side by side. You simply cut your chosen fabrics into strips at least 8" long but of different widths and then sew them side by side(by machine or hand, but machine is a lot faster) onto an 8X8 backing, usually muslin or cotton. Then you trim the edges back to the 8x8 size. You can embroider the seams (or not) by machine or hand. Try googling "easy+strip+piecing+instructions". You can also google "beginner+quilt+block+instructions" - there are a gazillion websites out there with lots of instructions. Hope this helps - good luck! T.

here's some ideas for easy quilt blocks http://www.quilt.com/Blocks/LogCabin/LogCabin.html http://www.quilt.com/BlockOfTheMonth/1998/Heart.html http://www.quilt.com/Blocks/AlphaBlockList.html

Bearynice 04/ 7/2007 #

Joyce , how about next month we send 2 blocks to our partner, this way our collection would grow quicker. Cheers Bev

liniecat 04/ 7/2007 #

What a lovely idea this is, Im in yes please. Would love to continue this and collect blocks to wallhang or stitch together. I made a sampler block wall hanging by way of learning how to patchwork. I merely used all shades the same so they matched/toned together. lol I also picked the blocks that were easiest for ME to do.......and daft as it sounds dresden went fine for me whilst others in the group struggled with it! I must have the knack of going round in circles! How do I find the group to join in on, on flickr please?

Craftlover10101 04/ 7/2007 #

Bev & Joyce, that sounds like a great idea, 2 blocks to one or 2 different partners?
I'm game.

funkykchicken 04/ 7/2007 #

I like the idea as well.I will send everyone an email at the start of round 4.If every one can agree and feel they have enough time then we will do 2 blocks. There is still 8 to 10 of us to sign up for this round.I'm hoping no one is losing interest.Any one for idea's on how we can shake it up and make it more exciting.

Craftlover10101 04/ 9/2007 #

I'm game I'm game lol, maybe a little note in the envi telling why that person decided to make the square that way or a little info about themselfs or how much they are injoying it etc.
I just started a 100% quilt swap myself I'm hoping I have a better turn out than my newspaper swap lol http://www.swap-bot.com/swap/show/3053

vickieb 04/ 9/2007 #

This sounds realy interesting. I love to do quilts. This will even be better because of having different people's touches. What a conversation piece this will be! Can't wait to get started. I too think making 2 squares would be great. It would make the project go faster. I think everyone should have their name put on the face of the square and where they are from and date. It would end up being a freindship quilt. Nothing fancy, just sign in permanent marker, embroidery, etc.

Craftlover10101 04/ 9/2007 #

oh yeah that's a great thought too the date, darn it! I just sent my first one out, my partner can write the date on it in perm or fabric marker if she wants or if she even likes it, or if she's here. lol

Bearynice 04/10/2007 #

I did a swap once where each person made a strip the width of the material x 10inches for the other person .there were 10 in the group and it went for 10 months .when you sewed all the strips together plus your own you had a rather large quilt. Before we started we stated our theme and colour scheme. Mine was cats in pink and green. I 'll try to put a photo on flicka cheers Bev

Craftlover10101 04/10/2007 #

That sound's neat too Bev. I'd love to see. I don't have your Flickr addy?

Craftlover10101 04/11/2007 #

**********If you want to be on an email list of the swaps that I start please email me. This way when I start a new swap I will email everyone on that list.*************

chrichri 04/12/2007 #

Can't wait until this swap starts:) Although this will be my first time making a quilt block; I think it's going to be great. I am really excited. I read through all the suggested quilt block types and the instructions and now I am just stuck with which one to do first:) I can't wait to get a partner to know what she/he likes so I can get started. I too think that making two blocks each time would be good because once the sewing machine is out, it's not that much more work.

Christina

Craftlover10101 04/12/2007 #

On the way home from fishing I stopped at the 99 cent store and found (amazing) a very sturdy box with the 2007 calendar of a pattern a day quilt blocks. Hmmmmm for 99cents unbelievable what luck. Bought two one for me and one for a friend of mine.

funkykchicken 04/13/2007 #

Welcome to all the new quilters. This will be the last quilting swap that will be public.Next month and all consecutive months will be private.I will be sending all of you an invite to join my yahoo newsletter group.Be sure to accept the invitation so you can be notified when new ones come along.

I'm still not sure about the two blocks.I will email everyone and ask them what they think.I know that some may just not have the extra time.Although you could ask your partner who is to send to you if they want to send you two blocks and you could send your partner two as well.If you want to know who is to send to you then just message me when the time comes.

I will have more to tell you tomorrow.I'm off to sleepy by.

Craftlover10101 04/13/2007 #

LoL funkychickenoriginals, I'm happy with what ever. I can't wait 2 more days. It shouldn't take long to look at 22 files to see everyone's likes and dislikes. Thinking maybe that will give me something to do. Make a square to everyone's likes and dislikes. I live such an eventful life eh. egads lol Tells ya just how many friends I have on the outside lol of this house. No one here enjoy's crafting like I do. Sooooo Ya'll can enjoy it k

liniecat 04/15/2007 #

Heather so you may be making upo 44 blocks? !!!! Have you all got your partners yet then? I see Heather has posted hers but my partners havent come up, up top yet? I guess if we do make 2 blocks, we could send one if thats all we've finished, then send the other after, if both partners agree, so we are not rushing a block just to get them both off? Does that make sense? lol We could incluse and IOU chitty in with the first.......though that doubles up posting costs of course and pay day isnt till last day of the month for me, always best time to post things lol

Craftlover10101 04/15/2007 #

LMAO Linie, not all at once lol. But I don't work, and I don't do much else besides clean house, play online, make dinner, get the kids home, homework, showers. Right now I am looking at my daughter who just woke up and her hair on the top of her head is sticking straight up like Alfalfa's lol. Ya know I'm a follower. So ya'll figure it out, what you want to do and I'll just sit and sew when I'm bored lol. I'm just having fun. :-) Bunches of Hugs, me in a good mood today.

Craftlover10101 04/15/2007 #

****sitting here waiting for the mail door bell to ring**** lol ****partners, partners, partners**** um lol Come on now ya'll are laughing aren't you?

Windchimes 04/16/2007 #

Hey ya! Can we get a little longer time since we still don't have our partners? Maybe an extra week? I'm not entirely sure why it is relevant but I am always looking for extra time. LOL

I got a GORGEOUS quilt block today in the mail that came all the way from Turkey!!! It is absolutely wonderful!!! thank you Nehal so very very much!!!!!

Windchimes 04/16/2007 #

Now that was really dumb - the first paragraph of my posting is for this swap - #3.

the second is for the swap #2. blush Heading over there now. Sheesh!!

funkykchicken 04/16/2007 #

Ok ladies sorry about that.I have been to swap land and forgot to come home. It's been so much fun over there.

Starting next month(june) we may be doing two quilt blocks. If you DONOT like the idea send me a message.I know that some of you do at least 15 or more swaps. So you may not be interested.

The quilt blocks when stitched together will give you a wall quilt or bigger if you want.I hope that each time you ladies look at it you will remember the friendships you made in our little quilting bee...I think i was born in the wrong century because i would love to have lived back in the day when woman gathered at each others houses.Just to share fabric, thread and new techniques they learned.

That almost gives me an idea for a vintage victorian sewing book swap.Lol i will have to mull that one over.

So to let all of you know.I am not home from 2 to 12 central on friday, saturday and sunday.I teach quilt classes from 2 to 6 and scrapbooking from 8 to 12...So if i don't always answer your messages or cant assign partners right away you know why.

Thanks to windchimes for reminding me lol.I checked the profiles and forgot to click assign.I do like all of your ideas ladies and have considered them.

Take Care and happy stitching.

Craftlover10101 04/16/2007 #

Hey funkychicken.... I feel the same way. I like the day whe you had coffee, cookies, and friends over to play. But now adays there are too many demands in life that most have to work. Especially with kids. Even those who make good money their partners still have to work to support the house. It's rising gas cost and life in general. Gas out here is up too $3.33 rediculous. I have a suggestion for the one and two block swap thing. If it's not too much work maybe you can continue the one block and make another swap up for two blocks. I don't know about the rest of ya'll but I get really bored and lonely. So this swapping thing is working for me. And this is really a great group of ladies. Especially if you go private you can almost gaurentee that they will all be good swappers and no one will miss out. my 2 cents HeatherS (who's always got 2 cents and needs to shut up sometimes)

liniecat 04/16/2007 #

Well you do seem as daft as me so I must be in just the right place............I think you should just let me know what and how many and give me an extra week too, cos I work all blummin day, what a drag, even though I love my job!!! AND I would have been right there with you, at that quilting bee.........I want a copy of that lovely american quilt film.........it captured the passion for storytelling in a quilt and loving and likeing your 'sisters'.........and yes, taking the *ish out of them from time to time too.............lol

user5629 04/17/2007 #

Hi there Windchimes, Thank you so much for your veyr kind compliments:) I am very pleased to see that my block for you arrived there safely and made your liking:) With a great pleasure and love, I made all by myside. Have a great day, Nihal

SewFun 04/17/2007 #

I think two blocks is a terrific idea! Helps the quilt grow faster and all. Count me in on that one!

For next month/round, I've joined the yahoo group, how do I join a flikr group?

Also, I'm out of town come Friday, until early May. I'll try and get online while we're away, but I may not get my block made until we return. It will go out before the deadline though, even if I'm up all night getting it done.

Laura

TerryF 04/17/2007 #

I would really prefer to stay at one block but will do my best to make 2 if that's how it goes. Working sucks. lol

Craftlover10101 04/17/2007 #

I'll do either it doesn't matter to me.

drewzel 04/17/2007 #

I must admit I'd prefer to stay at one block too - for a few reasons: 1. Easier to post (by that I mean cheaper! Aussie postage is a pain) 2. Too many swaps going at once for me 3. Full time work takes up too much of my valuable crafting time :P

What I've also been doing is making "1 for partner, 1 for me" every time I do a block :) Because I've never made a quilt before.

But I'm happy to go with the group decision.

liniecat 04/18/2007 #

Hm I hope if we make 2 blocs we make them for the same person cos that may be cheaper postage wise? Not altogther sure if that follows, but making two will take me longer cos I do the same, make one for myself as.......so thatd 4 a month or I miss myself out lol You see Im better with less options...this life has enough choices as it is!!!

Craftlover10101 04/18/2007 #

Well here's an idea. If and when you get your partner, you can ask at that time would they like to do 2 blocks just between the two of you. If they don't than you don't. That gives you a break till the next swap. But if someone does not want to do two blocks there is no getting upset over it. And if you want maybe a list of those who would like to make two can post and ya'll can share each other's information and do it privately or make a private swap just for those who want to make a second block. That way you still get the ratings.
These are just suggestions. I'm am in no way trying to but in on this swapping thing. Like I said I am happy either way it goes. And I understand those from out of the country and those here trying to keep cost's down with other swaps they are in.
I just don't want to loose this swap I am staying with this swap no matter what. I love it here. Heather

funkykchicken 04/18/2007 #

Heather:

Those are really good suggestions and i will consider them.Another thought is that i could pair up those who want to make two blocks together..Although that would mean that i would have to reconfigure the entire list.Which could involve a bit of work each month.Which would also mean that the person you rate may no longer be your partner.

If we do two different swaps that would break the group up, which i would rather not do.So if anyone else has suggestions please speak up.I will need to let my brain think this over.

Craftlover10101 04/18/2007 #

Have you thought of another swap for 12 inch squares? Than people will have the 8 inch to work on and the 12 inch.

user5629 04/19/2007 #

Hi to you all, I would prefer to stay at one block per month because of my daily life keeps me really busy one. Thanks for yr kind understanding on this. Lovies,

Turkish Delight

Bearynice 04/19/2007 #

Heather your idea won't work, the partner you send to may want to do 1 while the partner you receive from might want to do 2 Bev

Craftlover10101 04/19/2007 #

Well it's like I said, it's no big deal to me I'm following. It's not my swap so I do as is told. lol No biggie honest.

liniecat 04/19/2007 #

Soooooo am I making one bloc or two this month ? lol

Craftlover10101 04/20/2007 #

I don't know if anyone has answered you yet but I'm pretty sure it's just 1. That's the way the swap is set up. It was just everyone talking about there thought's on it.

user5629 04/27/2007 #

Dear Bev, My Goddesses Arrived! My little piece of Australia is at my hand:) Your gorgeous block arrived safely and sound today. The fabrics you've used are lovely, they are so springlike, really bright and cheerful. I adored it very much! Thank you soooo much indeed from the bottom of my heart, Bev. I will treasure it and gladly place in my future Project with other blocks. Lovies, Nihal ' Turkish Delight '

chrichri 05/ 2/2007 #

Hi Stephanie (drewsel),

Just got your gorgeous quilt block today!!! I love it; the colours are perfect and I really like the different patterns. Thanks a million, girl. It totally brightened up my day:) Oh; and the cute heart paper bag you had put it in is just lovely...

Over to something completely different.......If I understood correctly; the hostess is unfortunately not going to continue this swap:( Is it so that someone else will be taking over and if so where can we eventually join?

Christina

TerryF 05/ 2/2007 #

chrichri, the hostess will be continuing these swaps but, after this one, is going to make them private swaps by invitation only. As long as you join this swap and prove to be a good swapper, she will automatically send you an invite for all future ones.

chrichri 05/ 3/2007 #

Thanks, TerryF :)

That's what I originally thought but I must have gotten confused:) thank you for clearing that up.

Christina

funkykchicken 05/ 3/2007 #

I just wanted to add that there are only 17 members in the yahoo group. It really is important to sign up.It's very hard to sort through all the emails and members so that i don't have to double post.So that some of you wont get upteen emails from me lol...

Craftlover10101 05/ 3/2007 #

Hi Ladies, I am really going to try and sign up for both of the new one's but...... They are going on while I am going to be either getting ready for surgery or what ever. Yeah what ever lol, I haven't heard from the doctor. So all I know is it's planned for after my kids get out of school in June. After I finish the square I am working on now I am going to make two other's. But they might not match your profile. I hope this will be ok. I can have them ready to send and hubby can get them out. But I know that I have to go in before June to have other things done, testing etc. Anyway I just want to wait on signing up for the next rounds until after I have some made up. I hope you can understand. HeatherS

Hi Funkychickenoriginals...

As for the Quilt Block Swap With A Twist Round 4, I have got the name of Terry in Canada, again!

However as you read above the latest comments left by Terry, I had got her name Terry for the Block Swap Round 3 as well.

I am afraid there is a mistake while selection the names for the Round 4, at least for me.

I think I should not have this ''same'' name again for Round 4, do not you think so?

Could you please re-arrange and inform me about my ''New Partner'' to be able to join for the Swap Round 4 please?

I am urgently waiting for your reply back.

Thanks for your kind action and consideration on this matter.

Happy Quilting,

Turkish Delight in Istanbul

TerryF 05/15/2007 #

Turkish Delight: I am sorry that you received my name again, but FCO has no control over the assignment of partners - it is all done randomly by the Swap-Bot computer. If FCO were to manually reassign some of the partners (and that is asking a lot because she would have to contact and get other people in the swap to all agree to this), they would not be able to rate each other because the computer will only allow you to rate the partners it has assigned.

liniecat 05/19/2007 #

I am happy to do a swap with you Turkish if you like? I could then send to Terri? If we work it out tween ourselves and then rate the person despite who we receive from? That way we get a different perspective bloc? Just an idea! Wonder if we have got the same partners for all the swaps then? Will go have a look!

liniecat 05/19/2007 #

Nope had a look and my next blocs are with different folks,so guess its a glitch but am happy to swap another or instead of with you Turkish. Im off work for 6 weeks with foot plastered up so got time to play! See whatour host says and I'll fit in accordingly, otherwise if you contact me I am happy to do a one to one with you to vary your fun! I'd love a turkish entry!!! :)

vickieb 05/19/2007 #

Thanks Terry for letting me know it's on it's way. I will be looking for it.

Bearynice 05/20/2007 #

TerryF 05/20/2007 #

linie, thanks, FCO has made other arrangements for Turkish Delight and me so all is well...

suzylucie 05/23/2007 #

I just clicked on rate to see who was supposed to send to me and her name is Stephanie barner/Peace Witch. She had had me as a partner in two swaps and never sent anything so I'm certain I'm not getting a quilt block. If she signed up for any more of these, she needs to be banned. I am so dissapointed. She is casting a pall on the beautiful idea of joining these blocks from creative, talented women all around the world!

suzylucie 05/23/2007 #

After reading the comments, I checked my June and July partners and poor Windchimes is my partner for both AND I sent to her in May! This swap was originally posted to welcome beginners and I am very new to sewing (I am currently taking a class) but you only improve by practice right? Anyway, my blocks are very beginner and I am concernerd abour poor Windchimes being exposed to any more of my creativity! It seems it would be better if my efforts were spread around the group. Joyce, I can either let you fix this or maybe we can figure something else out, maybe if that Peach Witch person is signed up...?

Craftlover10101 05/23/2007 #

Hi Ladies, give it a couple more weeks for overseas. I sent something to one person it got there in 4 days reg mail. Than before that 2 1/2 months another person finally received hers but by than I had already sent out another package to replace it. So give it time. If still in two weeks someone didn't get a square let me know I'll help out.

funkykchicken 05/23/2007 #

suzlylucie i will send you a block but it will be a couple of weeks.Lets see since you have windchimes again how about you switch partners. You would both have to agree to go ahead and rate each other though.

Windchimes was to send to

Connie

Receive From

suzylucie

YOU were to send to

Windchimes

Receive From

Chrichri

I will be gone for about 10 days so if you and windchimes could message each other and work out the details that would be fine with me.Otherwise i will do my best when i return.

suzylucie 05/24/2007 #

No problem...I'll message her and we can work something out! I wish I could have taken a bet on that one...the odds of me getting the same partner three times in a row! I should get my butt out to Vegas! Enjoy your trip.

suzylucie 05/24/2007 #

Oh yeah, I'm not jumping the gun on Peace Witch. As I said, she has had me for other swaps that she never sent nor did she respond to messages. This has nothing to do with slow or overseas mailing and I was trying to let people know since many of us are working and sending ahead.

Bearynice 05/25/2007 #

Joyce I am one that has not sign up in the yahoo group because I don;t know how to BEv

TerryF 05/29/2007 #

In case anyone is checking out the gallery, I just wanted to explain that the block I made for vickie is called a Wavy Log Cabin - I wasn't drinking when I made it! lol

Craftlover10101 05/30/2007 #
