Description:

Take an old wool sweater that you don't use anymore, or get one at a thrift shop.

Felt it by washing the sweater in warm water with a little detergent in the washer, then dry in the dryer on high heat till fully dry. It will shrink and all the fibers will be tightly matted into a dense thick fabric.

Then make something for your partner out of the felted wool. Tote bags, hot mats, slippers, pillows, whatever your imagination comes up with.

The sweater must be all wool (which includes mohair and cashmere) to work right.

Google felted sweater crafts for ideas.

You must have a rating over 4.6 and no recent no-sends. Newbies must have a completely filled out profile.

When you do the felting, it is a good idea to put the sweater in a zipped pillow case. A lot of fiber can come out during felting and ruin you washer!

Yeay!! This is one of my favorite things to do!! Hooray for felted sweaters!

Lunaria 04/13/2007 #

Searight, thanks for the tip.

This sounds fun! I've got just the thing to work with-a shrug I made with Noro that shrunk and started to felt. Now I will finish felting it and actually do something with it.

cerwinrhiannon 04/22/2007 #

I hope using a shrug is OK. It's as big as a small sweater. If not, let me know and I can find a sweater.

grenacia 04/22/2007 #

Ooh, I just felted five sweaters from the Goodwill outlet store (clothes by the pound) and I'm ready to make them into stuff!

grenacia 04/22/2007 #

cerwinrhiannon, I'm not an authority or anything, but I would say being made out of lovely noro should make up for it being small in size! And there's plenty of little things you can make with felt, like little purses/wallets, notebook covers, or even felt flowers.

Sounds like fun. I have a stack of felted sweaters to work with.

cerwinrhiannon 04/25/2007 #

Sharla, I was hoping that would be the case. Noro has such nice self-striping, and I have a pretty big piece of it to work with.

Aack! I found the most lovely 60s-era handknit sweater at the thrift shop this weekend -- just perfect, and already partially felted so I didn't feel too badly about making it unwearable. As I predicted, it fulled beautifully.

One problem: Apparently the thing was kept in mothballs forever. The smell was not even there when I bought it, but once I'd put it thru the wash, it became overpowering and has yet to dissipate.

Any ideas on what to do? I remember keeping stuff in mothballs a long time ago, but I don't ever remember anything smelling this strong. I've got it out in the sunshine at the moment, hoping the sun and air will evaporate the benzene or whatever it is...

Message me if you have tips. THX!

I'd like to make a messenger type purse, but as we know felt is kind of floppy in bigger pieces. Any ideas on how to give it some support?

Thanks-cr

Scroll down towards the bottom; it's the post from 4/28. Hope this helps.

My package won't be able to be mailed until Tuesday, May 22, as the post office will be closed due to the holiday weekend here in Canada.

gwen1111 05/20/2007 #

I'm with jennyven....holidy weekend. Sorry, package will be mailed next day.

cerwinrhiannon 05/20/2007 #

I got mine mailed out. I didn't have enough felt to make a handle. I thought about using a cord, etc., but nothing I thought of seemed right, so there is no handle. Jazmin (lovely name!) please feel free to add one, if you wish.

I was so anxious to get it mailed out, I forgot to take a picture. Damn! I hate it when I do that.

Posted the pic on this swap gallery. Wish others would do the same... I'm interested to see what everybody made. So many possibilities!

I just recently made some pocket books from old 3.00 wool sweaters from Goodwill. Beautiful pocketbooks! Can be done either before or after felting. Cut it up. Sew it up. Wash it up. That's it. Sorry I cannot enter this one. Just joined today.

HartFelt 10/16/2007 #

Oh yes. Sample of my work is on Ebay now. Do a search for Needle Felted and it is the one that lists as Needle Felted OOAK Christmas Santa .
