As per the Oxford Dictionary: a Trifle is a cold dessert of sponge cake and fruit covered with layers of custard, jelly, and cream.

For this swap, we will exchange our favorite tried and true Trifle recipe with 3 partners. I challenge our friends in the UK to show us how it should be done, the rest of us will just have to struggle along somehow :) Do you use jelly/gelatin? real fruit? Sherry? Instant Pudding?

I wont join the swap as I am already in loads more but alot of british ppl are poor at making triffles! I think some of the best are the birdseye triffle in a box where it gives you each layer in a satchet an dyou make it that way. however a nice one is a layer of jelly (any flavour strawberry i like) once set break up chocolate muffins as a second layer. add in a few tinned and pitted cherries (you can add some of the juice into the jelly mix as well!) cover teh choc muffins with custard thick and lovely. whip up some whipping cream and put on top once custard is cooled. if you like top with grated chocolate, hundreads nad thousands and or chopped nuts....noone can steal this and use it as their own though :) lol

I thought the Trifle was a traditional English dessert and our UK friends would have great family recipes. Perhaps us foreigners can share our recipes and emulate the Birdseye Trifle in a Box (unfortunately I have not seen this in the stores in California).

ENGLISH TRIFLE TO DIE FOR! 1 (9 inch) sponge cake, cut in cubes 340 g seedless raspberry jam 225 g fresh raspberries

290 ml heavy cream 3 egg yolks 40 g white sugar

290 ml heavy cream 55 g sliced almonds Add to Recipe Box My folders:

DIRECTIONS Spread a little jam on each piece of cake and place in the bottom of a large glass bowl. Sprinkle raspberries over cake. Heat 10 fl. oz. cream in a medium saucepan over medium heat. While the cream is heating, beat the egg yolks with the sugar until pale yellow and smooth. Strain yolk mixture into a clean bowl. Pour hot cream into egg yolks and stir vigorously. Return mixture to pan over low heat and cook, stirring, until thick enough to coat the back of a metal spoon. Remove from heat and allow to cool. While custard is cooling, whip 10 fl oz. cream until soft peaks form. Place almonds on a baking sheet and toast, in a 300 degree oven or toaster oven, stirring frequently, until golden, 2 to 10 minutes. Spread cooled custard over cake in bowl. Top with whipped cream and toasted almonds. Chill 2 hours before serving.

Us kiwis make trifle too and I would love to share my dads recipe. I would prefer email as the way to send it out. But will still take part if it is a mail swap.

I don't have a trifle recipe and I would need a trifle bowl before I would event attempt to make such a lovely dish. Let's not forget the Friends episode when Rachel made trifle...

I don't make Trifle either, but LOVE it!!! I'm sure my Sis has a great one I can send. She's lived all over the world and is a fantastic cook! And email is my preference too.

I've sent to everyone, however the email for Melmay bounced twice (when I typed the address in manually and when I just clicked on the link and sent from there - so I know it was right at least one of those times!). Melmay, I'll send yours snail mail unless I hear back with a different e-mail address.

I have sent to everyone too.Like Scuslidge I had tthe same problems sending to Melmay when I typed the address manually. But when I clicked on the link and sent it from there it worked.Thanks for the recipes I have received thus far.
