Description:

This is the second round!

After reading discussions from other swappers who use recycled items for their ATCs and after receiving some great blanks from MrsChef and Camelsamba from recycled and found items, I decided to host a swap based on this concept. Similar to kerrlouise22’s Quick ATC Background swaps we will be swapping blanks, however there is just one slight difference. Partners are required to produce 30 ATC blanks from RECYCLED and FOUND items. We so often run to the store for our supplies that we often overlook wonderful options right under our nose. While this will be open to everyone and is international I do reserve the right to bump folks and will be checking for good ratings and no sends. New swappers please have your profile filled out before joining. Here is your challenge:

-Produce 30 ATC blanks for your partner

-Must be from recycled and found items

-You may NOT use scrap booking papers or card stock

-Other types of paper can be used, but please be creative

-All blanks must be at least card stock thick-if you must, reinforce finds with cardstock

-No repeats in design, but repeated sources are allowed

-You must have at least 6 different sources for your blanks, for instance all your blanks can NOT be cut from magazines. I would prefer you finding as many sources as possible, but understand some may be limited on this. Finding them is half the fun.

-Send blanks that are nice, useful, clean (keeping in mind that some will be recycled) and that you would enjoy receiving

-Finalize swap with a note listing what you used for your ATC blanks, maybe where you found items.

-Consider hearts for creativity

Here are a few items that you may consider using that I’ve seen mentioned and used in other ATC swaps: fabrics, thin metals and metal mesh, greeting cards, tissue paper, wrapping paper, book and magazine pages, cardboard, ephemera, maps, leather, and the list goes on. Enjoy and Happy Swapping! I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with!

Here's where I find mine: 1. The white cardboard that comes in the packages of multiple fun size candy bars. (Individual peanut butter cups have printed cardboard that sometimes says "You are perfect" that I'm waiting to use somewhere.) 2. I print my digital pictures at Rite Aid and at the end of the batch is a white glossy paper with my name & phone number that cuts down to 2 ATC's.

I'm not certain I get this swap. I cut all my ATC blanks from various grocery boxes around the house... but then I tend to prime out the graphic side with white paint. (I actually have a small tote with about a thousand of these already painted out and maybe a couple of hundred waiting for me to paint.)

So, for this swap should I leave them unpainted? I'll watch for now, but will most likely join.

Actually last round I received some lovely blanks manufactured from boxes that had been painted and textured. Some had tissue paper glued to them that had then been stamped with images and designs. I think that they could be sent either way, unfinished or painted. The point of the swap is to find household items that can be recycled into ATC blanks allowing us to tap into another path of creativity many don't follow. If you do, bravo! You are already right on path and this should be easy for you.

lol! I have them in an envie ready to be addressed and shipped!

I also love printed file folders, old postcards, the cardboard backing of yellow steno pads. Fun swap!!

This swap is SO exciting, I usually cut my ATC blanks from things that would normally go into the trash, & then add a layer of gesso sometimes lightly allowing the graphics to show thru, hence adding some depth/layers.......

On my watch list.. My blanks are in process.. I have also made up a list of where I got my blanks from and put a post it note on the back of each one. That way my partner can also try and guess where those blanks came from..

I do not paint over my blanks.. because many times the picture on there is something that can be used. If it is from a magazine, I will attach it to a blank card. I have a box of these types of blanks that come in handy.

I have a thing for reusing odd types of paper like wallpaper wrapping paper or odd boxes that things come in. I also like using the oddest possible items like sand paper and foil for a creative flair.

Recycled and found objects? Sounds like fun and I am in. Just a personal request if your cutting by hand--may I recommend you cut a little larger than the regulated size---I have received so many crooked pages in the past and they are not regulation size and I couldn't use them so I am asking if your my partner cut a little larger and I can resize them when received. Thanks and not meant to be a pain the the--you know.

I am so in! If you've gotten ATC's from me, you know that I recycle and up-cycle EVERYTHING. I can't wait to see what someone else comes up with. I just made some backs today from the inside of a candy wrapper....

30 seems like a daunting task! on the watch list, but i don't know for sure if i can hack it just yet. i'd def be down if it were something like 10 though.

Krazychef 08/25/2009 #

AS well...Cut A Bit Larger For Me To Size When Recieved. Thanks

breccamerie 08/25/2009 #

30 isn't really that many when you consider you only need 6 sources. So that could be 5 from food boxes, 5 from wrapping paper, ect. Trust me, the task goes quick once you find your supplise. It's the hunt that takes up the most time.

chimerix 08/26/2009 #

If we need to cut large, I guess I am out. Mine are already cut, as most of them have come out of my stash. Though, I use a cutter and mine are always "proper" size.

breccamerie 08/28/2009 #

I am going to say that you don't have to cut large. I know some folks prefer the extra, but that makes it hard for some of us who have already completed those blanks. Just try to make your blanks as neat and perfect as possible. Of course, that's typically a common sense thing, but I know some folks actually enjoy the fact they are not perfect.

raeraethejetplane 08/29/2009 #

It is simple to hide small imperfections like crooked edges. Cut your background image 1/4" larger on all sides than the ATC base and fold the edges over so you can glue them on to the back. If you background image is on thick enough paper you can also hide the images on the atc blanks if they are made from packaging. I prefer pasting my background on this way because it keeps the layers together much better.

raeraethejetplane 08/31/2009 #

Breccamerie is right, it doesn't take long once you have your materials together. I finished my atc blanks today and I'm happy to have some extras for myself as well. Waiting for partners to be assigned so I may ask if they would mind some extra blanks that come from cardboard found on the ground all aged and grungy looking (and with a small amount of dirt)

purplestar 09/ 4/2009 #

Got all mine together - oversized at the moment. Once I know who to send to I see if they want them exact or with abit extra.

thredz 09/ 6/2009 #

I use year-end reports and scientific magazine covers (always heavy, glossy stock with amazing graphics), Check out the development dept of any local NPO--they'll have last year's everything and would love to see it recycled. Your local college should have lots of outdated, expensive paper materials too. And I would love to get some cereal box parts, cuz my kids don't eat interesting cereals. I've made 15 blanks, and now will see what my 'artner is interested to inspire the rest. BTW, I cut to size too, if you're one of the peeps who want 'em large, I'll see what I can do with the next 15...
