Description:

Do you have a bazillion plastic grocery store bags laying around and you know you couldn't possibly use THAT many in your bathroom trash can but you can't throw them away because you are trying to be more Earth friendly?

I came across this website that shows how to make a tote bag from plastic shopping bags. I thought this was SO COOL! My teen daughter was even inspired and together we spent one evening cutting up our bags and rolling it in to "plarn" (plastic yarn).

So, here's the deal. You make one plastic bag tote. You can use any pattern you want. You can knit it or crochet it (or braid it-whatever as long as it is strong and durable). Make a good sized bag. We don't want any "coin purses" showing up. The bag you create needs to be large enough to actually be used at the grocery story. Let's say a minimum of 15 inches long (not including handles) and 13 inches wide.

Now, let's not be measurement Nazi's and rate down if the bag is 1/4 inch shorter...we all know how knitting and crocheting can have variations. At the same time, please do your best to meet (or even better, exceed) the measurements so that there are no issues.

Here's a couple websites to get you started:

Here's a link to show what one looks like that is made from the plastic grocery bags...

Newbies are welcome with complete profile (at my discretion) I may ask you for more information on your profile if I feel it is sparse.

This one is USA/Canada only. If there is interest I would be happy to host an international one. I am sure you have cool bags over there to recycle! EDIT: International Swappers click HERE to join the international version of this swap!!!

I will check profiles before assigning partners and I will also be checking the Swap-Bot Flakers group before assigning partners. This means if you are a flaker, don't join. I will find out and ban you.

I may edit this swap as I see fit based upon any suggestions or questions you all may have.

yay, a crochet swap AND for a bag! Sounds good to me...definitely watching!

And in the spirit of recycling, I've seen also crochet done with other forms of plastic too, like cassette tapes and VHS, and they're pretty cool when done ^^

I'd be up for an international one.

I've seen patterns for plastic bag belts but they don't make it into yarn first. Interesting indeed! Sadly I don't think I'll have the proper amount of time it'll take me personally to do this (I am SO SLOW at crocheting) but it sounds super cool! Awesome idea :-D

@Doodlebabe Start making one if you wish and when you're finished I'd be happy to do a private swap with you!

This is the first time I've seen this and I'm eager to try it. I'm in!

UGH! Is anyone else having problems with this? I am really struggling with the chain stitches in the beginning.
