Description:

I've just finished my first crazy quilt block in over twenty years, and find I really like it, but most of the fabric and quilt swaps around are for 100%cotton quilt fabric--and crazy quilts are best with other interesting fabrics like satin, velvet, silk, etc., so I thought a new kind of fabric swap was in order!

You will have one partner, and send one 6x9" envelope nicely filled with scraps (at least 2" x 2", but no larger than either 12" x 9, or 6" x 18"--which will still fit in the envelope). Try to stuff in enough to make one 12" x 12" block with a lot of pieces. You can include a little embroidery thread, or other appropriate embellishments, but the fabric is the real important part of this swap.Try to make as much variety in patterns and solids and types of different fabrics as you can, and don't forget to check out your partner's profile for favorite colors.

Please pack your fabric in a zip-loc bag (press out the air!) before putting it into the envelope so it will be protected from any weather/water damage. If you come from a smoking environment, try to air it all out for several days before packing it, and tuck in a dryer sheet or sachet to help eliminate the odor. Some people have severe allergies to cigarette smoke, so to those people, please make note on your profile and be reasonable if your partner sends something smelly--it can be cleaned, or replaced--contact them before rating badly. If you are a smoker and get a non-smoker partner, communicate and see if something can be arranged.

It's International, because this size envelope shouldn't weigh too much, so the postage will be reasonable.

Since there is no real crafting skill involved, Newbies are welcome if they have a really well filled out profile and commitment to fulfill the swap. If you even remotely think you won't be able to come up with an excellent selection of cool fabrics for your partner, please don't join. I'll do another of these swaps at a later time if this one goes well, so you can have time to collect fabric for another partner later.

I will be checking profiles and I'm not afraid to ban questionable people, so PM me if you have anything you need to tell me before you want to join.

this is on my watch list until the date gets closer, but I was wondering if a 4 1/8 in and 9 1/2 inch envelope a suitable alternative? this is the largest evelope i can mail by canada post standards at the letter, instead of package rate. i was also wondering if their were a minimum number of pieces or rules on duplicate fabrics (same texture or color). thanks so much in advance, and this is a great swap idea!

This is going to be fun. I love crazy, scrappy quilts. A great way to use all your fabric. Thanks for this one!!

My daughter and I just started to get in to crazy quilting! We're in!

I am glad you mentioned allergies. Ditzy me forgot to put mine on my profile, and I am allergic to cigarette smoke and perfumes. I just realized how lucky I got with my 2 partners in the last fabric swap I was in!

I don't mind duplicates (within reason) but are they allowed?

I have put this on my waiting list to see if I have enough fabric to participate on this one or need to wait for another time. This kind of quilt is one I really want to make before I can't quilt anymore. I just love the ones I've seen before. Thanks for putting this swap on Swap-bot.

About duplicates--I think not, because the point is to get a wide variety--if you send the larger size pieces, that's enough to make several scraps parts of a block, so not to duplicates.

Happylilartist, I'm not sure there will be an equivalent amount of fabric in a smaller envelope--there should be enough fabric in it to make a 12"x 12' block remember.

Does the thickness matter when they consider whether it's a package or not? If not, and you can make it thicker, then go ahead.

I'm figuring the 6x9 envelopes may end up being packages anyway, because here, if they are more than 3/4" thick, it goes at the package rate. Our savings will be in the lighter weight.

I did a crazy quilt a few years back made entirely with mens ties and it is a favorite of everyone!!

twobluecrows 10/11/2009 #

That's cool--ties come in so many fabulous fabrics and patterns! I have a box somewhere with over two hundred ties that are all cut into pieces for a regular patchwork quilt, using only one piece from each tie, and a neutral fabric as a background in the Mexican Cross pattern, that I started about 20 years ago--someday I will finish it--I hope!

I tried to e-mail this message out, but someone's email addy is non-functional, and I couldn't figure out who--please check your account info for your e-mail addy to be sure it works for your partners.

Hi! Only two more days to wait to have partners assigned for this swap. So far all who have signed up look like great swappers, a lot of familiar names, and I'll be checking the list again before I assign. Please keep in mind that the fabrics can be anything because they're for crazy quilts. Just check for cleanliness and soundness--nothing worse than working something dry-rotted into a block!

If you're the type inclined to tuck in extras beyond the call of the swap--embellishments like embroidery floss, fancy ribbons, buttons, strings of sparkly beads and other little fancies are useful in making a crazy quilt block.

Have fun!

I already have a few fabrics picked out for this.

Partners are assigned--sorry for the delay--I can only use massive distraction as an excuse, but let's swap!
