Description:

I was sent a postcard made out of fabric once and it looked really neat and have wanted to try it myself! Use whatever fabric you have, sew it, glue it, hand stitch it, solids, paterns.. This is just a creative postcard that has to have ONE side covered in some type of farbic.

We will have 1 partner to make one fabric postcard for.. Mail it naked or wrapped up.. senders choice! But it MUST be a mailable postcard!

Color/theme is senders choice.. I think we all know enough to look at our partners profiles for ideas.

All the normal swap rules apply.. NO FLAKING.. I retain the right to contact any particpant prior to assinging partners if they have recent 1s or 3s, or has a bare profile. (Not thinking this is going to be a problem in this group! LOL)

I want to do this one so bad but I have no clue how in the hell to do this.... Augh!!

Rubyfreckles 12/22/2009 #

Nic- google it- there are tons of tutorials, etc!

You can get clear envies to put your fabric postcard in so you can still see it, but it doesn't get beat up by PO machines. I've done a number of these. If they are flat with no embellishments you can mail as is for a regular stamp (can't use a postcard stamp). If they have any embellishments you need to put them in an envie and take them to the PO as they will probably require extra postage.

I have no idea what Im doing either LOL.. I think I am going to use a layer of fabric, then cardboard, then foam.. and hand stich a design into it, to hold it all together LOL... Figure its a learn as you go kinda thing!

You can do embellished fabric, Peltex (it's a very firm stabilizer), and muslin on the back where you write the address. Zig-zag all around. Easy-peasy.

Rubyfreckles 12/22/2009 #

easy peasy TC? what is muslin? and where can I find peltex? LOL:P

TC 12/23/2009 #

Oh dear. LOL.

Muslin is a plain, woven fabric made of cotton. It's cheaper than quilting cotton and comes in two colors, white and natural. You can find it in any store that carries fabric. I buy remnants of it at WalMart.

Peltex is a stabilizer made by Pellon. You can find it in craft & fabric stores.

I think the walmart here got rid of their fabric dept :( no one else around here sells fabric anymore either. bah!

Yahoo has a group that only does fabric pc's its called postcardpizzazz - i belong, but i still haven't made one :(

TC 12/25/2009 #

Okay. You can also sew fabric to cardstock!

I'm in. I did a Christmas Fabric PC and said I'd never do another one, but ... I can't help myself.

Here are a couple sites I found helpful:

http://www.4ormore.co.uk/projects/postcards.htm

http://www.arbeedesigns.co.nz/pdfs/Postcardlesson.pdf

http://debrichardson.blogspot.com/2005/09/how-to-make-fabric-postcard-debr-style.html

And by the way, it does NOT have to be complicated. Just think through what you want to do and take your time!

I'd like to play, but have to sit this one out as I am going to be out of town the 8th thru 16th and just don't know about timing of getting it finished. Hope you do another one. I've made a few of these fabric postcards and belonged to a couple fabric postcard swaps as well, so I have lots of them. They are fun to do. :)

Ok, I am going to try it. I have never made one but I have a really nice sewing machine that is collecting dust. and I know what peltex is :). Whoever I get team up with as long as they know I have no clue what I am doing but I am going to do my best.

Maggles45 01/ 5/2010 #

I make them all the time. Go to my website from my profile to see my postcards & atcs. All are made from fabric. I am on a postcard swap group for over 5 years - take a look at some of these cards & they have a tutorial.

I wish I could do this but I am unable to sew.

Maggles45 01/ 6/2010 #

Randy - I taught a class on making fabric postcards without having to sew -except if you want some beady thingees on it.

There is fusible peltex at Joanne's. Iron on the fabric. Cut out appliques. There is fusible webbing that can be used & iron on tapes. You don't need to sew. If you do paper stuff like ATCS, scrapbooking, etc you can do the same with fabric. I use matte gel, fabric markers, pens, glue, acrylic paint and watercolor pencils are wonderful. There are lots of ways to make them. I do use my sewing machine a lot, but you don't need to to make the cards.

Glad to see we finally have some more participants. Looking forward to getting a partner and a new PC! AND, making a new one! LOL

Just a note: Pioneer Extra Strength Embellishment glue stick works well on fabric. I used it to stick stuff to my postcard. I also sealed it with Mod-Podge for Fabric and was able to writ on it with Zig Writers after it was COMPLETELY dry.

Mine will be in the mail tomorrow (Tues.). It was ready Saturday but too late for the mail.
