Description:

Kudos to Autumn Moon for starting the USA Only swap and enlightening me to this idea. I'd never heard of it before!

In fact, I've just copied and pasted her swap description and made a few small edits.

A couple of great ladies started this prayer shawl ministry. Yes, they are Christian Ministers, but their ideas are very inclusive to all faiths and traditions. If you take the time to look over their website, you will see this.

I am keeping this swap open to all faiths as I personally don't consider myself a Christian (or any religion), although I am very spiritual and believe that prayer can be shared across the borders of religion.

http://www.shawlministry.com/

Please take time to thoroughly look over this website, all of the questions you might have can be answered there, but if you still have more questions, feel free to pm me.

This will be more than just a swap, it will be a journey. If you sign up for this swap, you agree to the following:

1) You will make one prayer shawl for one partner.

2) You will have 8 weeks to complete and mail your shawl. This is very doable, as you can make your shawl from any number of simple knit or crochet patterns, and some people even use the various kinds of looms for these.

3) Your partner can give a list of three preferred colors, the shawl will be made out of yarn of one or more of those colors. Your partner can not request a specific fiber, but can list allergies, and you should not use yarn that he/she is allergic to. Please do not expect your partner to use expensive fibers, please do expect them to use any commonly available yarn of their choosing, (that you are not allergic to). Your partner will also contact you or you can contact them, so that you can know any special intention you should be meditating on while making the shawl. If you have any problems with this idea, then this is not the swap for you.

4) You really must mail your shawl on or before the deadline. If something happens to prevent his, you MUST contact me ASAP.

5) You agree to keep in contact with the group via weekly emails as to the progress of your shawl, and any changes the process of creating the shawl may be bringing about in your life.

6) Please make sure your shawl is of a generous size, at least 6 feet long if a rectangle, or at least 6 feet on the longest side if a triangle shape. Some of us are more voluptuous than others, and we want to feel engulfed by this shawl.

7) You will know if this swap/project is for you or not by reading the guidelines. If your heart is not in it, don't sign up.

8) Because of the time and commitment involved in this swap, I will be checking everyone's profile thoroughly. I will remove you if you have only completed online/cyber swaps. You must have completed more than a handful of snail-mail swaps and have a decent track record.

This is such a beautiful idea! I can't wait to start knitting. i have the perfect pattern, but am eagerly awaiting my partner's profile to chose the yarn!

cooan 07/ 7/2007 #

i'm so glad to see other people are into it! i think they provide a pattern, and although i don't mind receiving a different pattern at all... the key is to have something long enough to be able to wrap yourself up with all the good prayers and thoughts in the shawl :)

Cooan, this is really taking off, as of now we have a total of 3 swaps in progress on this basic theme. (Vivica9 started a round two, USA ONLY SWAP)How great is this!!! AM

cooan, I note above that this is also in the "Sewing" category, but all of the descriptions/references are to knitting and crocheting. I do not crochet anymore (arthritis) and never did like knitting, but is it possible to sew a shawl instead of knitting or crocheting one? I am thinking that a shawl could also be made of fleece or another cosy knit fabric. What do you think? If you only want knitted and crocheted shawls for this swap, I am certainly ok with that, I was just wondering...Thx! Terry

cooan 07/ 9/2007 #

I included sewing because I think that is more than acceptable! I did some googling to answer your question, and I found this prayer quilt:

http://www.dianenoble.com/PatternsofLove.html

I think that a prayer shawl/blanket/quilt made of any method is fabulous for this swap and I think fleece or anything else cozy would be fabulous. :)

TerryF 07/ 9/2007 #

Great - I'm in! Thx.

My request to my partner:

  • I am allergic to wool. And, while I love eyelash yarns, they are too ticklish around my neck and face! Anything else, knitted, crocheted or sewn, is fine.
  • I love black, blues, purples.
  • I would really appreciate good thoughts, prayers, meditations, whatever you like to call it, for my vision because I have macular degeneration.

(When I wrote this just now, I thought, "How selfish, asking for something for myself." But, without my eyes, it will be much more difficult to do for others...so I hope you understand.)

Thx.

cooan 07/10/2007 #

I don't think that's selfish at all! This swap is for receiving prayers AND giving them. ;)

No solid pastel colours for me, kids! I like solid, rich colours... if there are pastels mixed in with the richer colours then that'll be fine... I just can't have ALL pastel. :)

Message me if you get me as your partner as I don't have stuff I need praying for, I just don't want to tell everyone. ;)

What a beautiful, beautiful idea. The pattern seems simple enough. I'm religious and spiritual in an Ann Lamott kind of way...I love the fact that this is open to all faiths/ spirituality practices! I love blues, greens and purples. I prefer deeper/darker colors. As far as prayer requests... I have a teenager, a nine-year-old, a husband and a full time job teaching first grade. That's plenty of cause for prayer and keeps me busy, but I would also love prayers for those without health insurance and those without adequate water in our world. Also, those in the Darfur region. Thanks!

My mother-in-law is in the ministry, go figure! I'll have to tell her this swap is here!

brnwebgrrl 07/18/2007 #

I was involved with a Prayer Shawl ministry a few years ago, so I was thrilled to find this swap on swap bot. We made many shawls and sent them down to a church in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina.

I was also involved with an online Prayer Shawl swap where we set up a yahoo group and made shawls for one another and prayed for one another. It was just lovely. I hope that people are mindful of the responsibility to be faithful when they sign up for this swap.

There is something wonderful about creating something with your own hands, praying for the intended recipient and then sending that object off into the the world. It is a gesture that brings out the very best part of who we are as both human and spiritual beings.

SimplyShnookly 07/18/2007 #

I can't crochet or knit worth a darn, but boy I wish I could join! I love prayer shawls, my mother in law made me one last year for my wedding. It was made from her mother's yarn, which was very centimental!

TerryF 07/18/2007 #

SimplySchnookly, I can't knit or crochet either, but I am going to sew one out of fleece. If you sew, you can still join...

cooan 07/19/2007 #

wow, i just poked my head in here cause i haven't had chance yet... i'm so glad to see everyone is excited! i know that i am too!

if you guys have any questions, please message me as that will get my attention. :)

This just seems like a good time to start this swap i have just spent all day at the hospital with my other half and have left him there for a scan in the morning - so a prayer shawl feels like the right thing to be doing I have often looked at the site and thought yes but not done anything but now the time feels right - sorry to go on. shades of purple are my hearts desire.

TerryF 08/ 6/2007 #

cooan: I am so sorry to have to drop out of your swap, but I am moving --- unexpectedly --- the 3rd week of August and will be out of the country for 2 weeks at the end of September/beginning of October, including over the due date. This is too important to rush and I am afraid I won't have time to do a nice job or the weekly emails. I hope everyone has a wonderful experience with this swap! Hugs, Terry

I'm starting on mine today, thinking of my swap partner while I work and will be sending peace and love with every stitch. I'll be happy with whatever colour I receive although I do prefer blues and purples and I'm not very good with "scratchy" yarns. This is such a lovely thing to be doing!

MelissaL1023 08/16/2007 #

Valerie (Dotty_Dotty)- PM me when you get a chance and let me know your preferred colors and yarn type. I don't want to create something you wouldn't use.

Are we supposed to be mailing to our partner once a week? I'm not sure if I can follow through with that since school starts up next week. At any rate, I've enjoyed the quiet time I've spent casting on and have knit about 8 inches so far on the shawl. I knit about 2 inches in the hospital the other day when I was waiting for my son, who had a broken arm, to return from surgery. It was nice to be thinking of someone else in that situation. Happy knitting to all!

Sheesh Ladies, I cant believe up until now I didnt even know there was a message board at the bottom of the screen I thought it was just the message box at the top of the screen. Ive got a lot of apologizing to do Iguess and a lot to learn about SWAPBOT> LOL I love the swaps though had a little trouble with the mailings as I relied on others who were not too dependable. SueQ(sheshallbe)

MelissaL1023 10/ 8/2007 #

Valerie- Your shawl is complete and I'm just boxing up the presentation. Will have it in the mail tomorrow or Wednesday 10/9 or 10/10.

This has been a lovely swap and I truly hope you enjoy the shawl. I also hope my prayer intentions work for you.

Blessings to you!
