Description:

I thought it was about time to start a round of squares to create a goddess quilt! Each month will have a different theme. Because the finished product will be light and mailing costs shouldn't be ridiculous, I'm opening this up to international.

Some blocks may be more difficult than others. If you’re uncertain about your skills and would rather set up a private trade for a given block, I’ll be more than glad to accommodate you.

Feel free to drop in on the block trade at any time. I plan on keeping this going for quite some time in order to get in as many different goddesses and ideas done as possible, so no one should feel that they’ll have an uneven quilt if they miss a few rounds.

Some months we’ll have templates and others we won’t. Some months we’ll have more than one partner and others we won’t (or we might not ever, I’ve not yet decided on that yet).

For any blocks that require a foundation, I will leave it up to the creator/creatrix on how best to approach that method. Edit In other swaps, different fabrics will be encouraged (though not required), but I want to keep this a simple block.

Make sure and put time and effort into this!

This month’s block will be the Spiral Goddess

The finished block will be EDITED 9" which includes a 1/2 inch seam allowance. This will give enough space for a creative canvas for each square.

The Spiral Goddess will be an appliqué design on the block.

The goddess should look similar to this one or this one with arms upraised and/or joined together above the head, breasts, and a spiral near her center.

Place the goddess in the center of the block, or as close as possible.

Make the goddess in your partner’s requested colour (list your requested colour below in the comments). The goddess should be between 5 -7 inches tall. She can be made of felt or fabric.

The background should be a good contrast or compliment to the goddess. Get out your colour wheels!

You can decorate the block itself, if you feel moved, with extra spirals or swirls (colours up to the sender). Let’s stick to the theme when it comes to decoration.

For these blocks let’s stick to 100% cotton (I will allow felt appliqué) and without bobbles and dangly bits that might come off when getting washed. I’d like this quilt to be useable.

We will definitely be creating other goddesses where you’ll have extra space for imagination, but to get everyone started I wanted to make this one a bit more defined and simple.

ADDITION: Put your initials/signature or maker's mark in the square's bottom right corner (don't initial in the seam allowance!) unless you want to sign in fabric marker--I'll leave it up to the sender.

Rules on joining

You must have a good rating (at least a 4.9). No 1s within the past three months.

You must have at least 10 mailed/package swaps completed and rated.

I will be reviewing everyone signing up and will remove you from the swap if you don’t meet the rules/criteria.

I usually understand so if you have any issues going on and you want to join please mssg. me and maybe we can work it out.

P.S. I will angel, but let's not make that necessary!!

I have a couple of things to ask:

First, as this is a quilt square swap could you add in the requirement or at least highly suggest that people sign their blocks somehow (not necessarily their full name-something like initials or a maker's mark). With swaps like this it's much better to be able to have something to identify the artist by even if only vaguely. It's hard to remember later on who made what and signatures just add to swap type quilts.

Second, is the 8 ½ inches with or without the seam allowances? And what should we be using for the seam allowance width (will make a difference when putting the quilts together). I know some people who use the standard 1/4" quilting seam allowance and others who use 5/8" or 1/2" allowances like with garments even though they're quilting. Maybe a wider allowance would work better so there's a bit more leeway and room for error? It's easier to cut off extra than add fabric while preserving the original look. I might be sounding nitpicky but I've heard a lot of horror stories from quilters.

I'm glad you brought up your concerns @winterwindarts I'll make the edits above.

Definitely if anyone has concerns, please let me know so I can address them!

I'll up the square to 9" which includes a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

We can certainly put our initials/signature or maker's mark in the square bottom right corner (don't initial in the seam allowance!) unless you want to sign in fabric marker--I'll leave it up to the sender.

I'm definitely looking forward to this swap! as far as color choices go, I have none. I will leave it completely up to my partner to make something she think I will like. And the chances of me not liking it are slim to none!!!

Awesome, so glad you joined up! :)

How cool! I'm really looking forward to this, and am definitely joining all upcoming rounds. What a great art quilt this will make! I will leave color choice to my partner. It is, after all, her piece of art, and I would love for the piece to reflect her point of view. Please be sure to sign and date the block.

Oh this sounds so interesting, but I have never made quilting blocks before, anybody have any good links for tutorials?

OpheliaQuilts 03/14/2010 #

@LadyBathory I've been trying to find something close to what we're doing but haven't found anything really. And with never having made quilting blocks before, I want to get you as closea tutorial as possible, so I'm going to create a quick tutorial this week and post it. Hopefully this will help out any new-to-quilting-blocks who would like to join.

LadyBathory 03/14/2010 #

Wow that's good service :D
But don't stress out over it, I can always join the next one :)

Here's the tutorial I promised posted up at my new blog. The blog is still under construction but the tutorial is done. Let me know if you have any questions!

I just love the sound of this swap. I would love it if you happen to have fabrics in earthy colors/deep reds/oranges/warm/autumny colors ... however, if a particular fabric in some other color scheme strikes you as just the one, then go ahead. I'll love it any way you choose to do it. (o:
