Description: | |
DÃÂa de Portugal, June 10, is Portugal’s National Day, officially only celebrated in Portugal, but Portuguese emigrants and descendents throughout the world celebrate their ancestry and join in this day celebrating Portuguese culture, history, and accomplishments with others in their own communities. Officially it is DÃÂa de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas – a three-fold event which celebrates Portuguese culture, marks the date of poet, Luis de Camões, in 1580, who wrote Portugal’s national epic poem, the Os LusÃÂadas, celebrating Portuguese history and achievements, and a time to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of Portuguese people in their local communities. World history reflects the influence of the Portuguese on every continent. From one of the smallest nations on the European continent, sailed the greatest discoverers who left a legacy of Portuguese culture and tradition that remain to this day on every continent. From Africa to Goa to Macao to Philippines to Hawaii to Brazil to Newfoundland, the legacy of Portuguese culture & traditions remain to this day. In America, descendants of the Portuguese have made a lasting impact, beginning with the first recording of a Portuguese settler, Mathias de Sousa, landing in 1634 in Maryland. There are Portuguese communities in California and New England, in Canada, and all points between. In all fields, including law, entertainment, government, education, finance, religion and medicine, Portuguese Americans have made lasting footprints. John Philip Sousa, the march king, and tv personality Meredith Vieira, singer Nellie Furtado, baseball player, Mark Teixeira, are all of Portuguese descent. In this swap you will have 3 partners. You will send to each, one item, like an ATC, a postcard, or a one page memory ... some suggestions are: – an ATC in the colors of Portugal’s flag, red and green (with a little yellow), perhaps with a mention of a Portuguese contribution to the world or a celebratory message. -share your own Portuguese ancestry with a page written about an ancestor immigrating from a Portuguese community, visiting a Portuguese family member, participating in a filharmonica, celebrating the Portuguese summer festas, perhaps with a picture. Or -find a postcard featuring something about the Portuguese in your community. Use your imagination. Have Fun! Come and celebrate with the Portuguese! This is my first swap creation, so please ask if there is something that you don't understand. |
