Swap categories: Fabric  Sewing  Art
Number of people in swap:10
Location:Other
Type:None
Last day to signup/drop:September 2, 2007
Date items must be sent by:October 8, 2007
Number of swap partners:3
Description:

This idea came from seeing Tibetan Prayer Flags online, and to avoid the religious ties, I'm calling them Wish Flags.

Each player will have 3 partners and shall make 1 flag for each of them. The idea of them is to put images and designs on them that express a Wish you wish for your partner or the world in general--Peace, Joy, Happiness, Love, something from their profile, etc.

The flags are to be made of fabric, and either triangular in shape or rectangular and approximately 8" x 10". The triangular ones should have the long point at the bottom. They are made with ribbons(two ribbons sewn lengthwise along the top with about 3" of the ends free on each side for tying) to tie them on a long string to fly, the wind bringing the wish to the Powers That Be, in hopes of being granted.

Here are some sites that show samples of Tibetan Prayer Flags:

There will be a month between the sign-up deadline and the mailing date, so we should have plenty of time to make three little flags. No reason not to start the minute you sign up and get done ahead of the deadline, too.

Players must have at least 4.9 to join, newbies can contact me to express their wish to join, and give me good reasons to let them--it is of utmost importance to have a commitment to complete the swaps--no one likes to work so hard on something so nice and get burned! Communication is key! A few pleasant messages here in the Comments, and to your partners is sure to convince us that you are a real person who cares, and even if you are late, you might be more easily forgiven! ;)

Your description says 3 partners, but you only have it set up for Swap-Bot to assign one partner.

Wow, you're fast, I'm still editing the swap! I'll fix it. Cyn

twobluecrows 08/23/2007 #

There, that should do it! Cyn

This sounds great! I love the flags from Karuna--they have a ton of interfaith, multicultural prayer flags that might give you some design ideas. http://www.karunaarts.com/

DreamHope 08/23/2007 #

Sorry for jumping the gun, Cyn! I didn't realize it hadn't been up very long. I'm in - it sounds like a great swap.

Anam 08/23/2007 #

It would be cool if there was a swap where we could all end up with enough different flags to put them up all together like the Tibetan Prayer flags

Nanamint 08/24/2007 #

8"x10" that means around 20x25 cm doesn't it ?

The idea is great indeed, thanks twobluecrows !

I won't be signing up till I am sure i can meet the deadline, but I just wanted to say that I think this is a wonderful swap idea!

twobluecrows 08/24/2007 #

Dreamhope--no problem! I was in the middle of creating it when you found it! Just good timing--I'm glad you joined!

Anam, we should end up with three here, and there's no reason not to start another swap after this one to add more! I started this one because I tried it in one of my yahoo groups and didn't get enough people to play. So between this one and that one, I should end up with 5 flags, so more would be nice! I didn't want to do too many here, because it may take a while to make them if you don't have a lot of crafting time, so I wanted to make it possible for more busy people, like me, to participate and be able to finish in time for mailing.

SpinJenny,I hope you can find the time, if not this time, we'll probably do another later!

Nana from Paris, I'm not sure about the metric measurements, but it's a little smaller than a sheet of regular printer paper. Something close is fine.

After viewing the sites, I'd like to know whether to hem or not. Traditionally, there are no hems so that the wishes are more quickly spread, but I wonder if we need to keep them moving longer. To hem or not to hem???

twobluecrows 08/28/2007 #

Weyrmistress, I think it's totally up to you. I like the no-hem-spreading-the-wish-faster idea, but one or more of your partners may have a preference, so you can ask if you like. I'd be happy with mine either way from whoever my partners are.

what an awesome idea!!!!!!!!11i love making these also, just wondering can we make more than 1 square and sew on a longer srting?

and if it matters i think the no hem idea for sperading the "wishes" faster is beautiful but you could always make it crafters choice....

thanks for doing this swap, its alo a fun swap to involve the kids( i will recruit all three of mine!!! they will keep their flage, not to worry partners no 3 year old paintings for you:)smiles:)).........textile paint and creative kids of any age will love it too!!!

twobluecrows 08/30/2007 #

Oh! Noel! I'd love flags made by your kids! Theirs are the most powerful wishes of all you know! :)

What do you mean by "can we make more than 1 square and sew on a longer [string]"? The flags themselves are just one unit--you can make them out of squares like a patchwork quilt block if you want, but only one flag per partner is required--more are just heart-stuff! :)

I got a flag already! Thanks so much to Weyrmistress Muriel! I'll post a picture of it soon in the swap gallery, and get to work on mine! Cyn

DreamHope 09/18/2007 #

I accidentally clicked the "sent" button yesterday, but the flags went into the mail first thing this morning anyway, so I don't think it really matters. Flags are on the way to the US, Australia, and Sweden from Canada... it'll be a race to see which one arrives first!

LMM 09/25/2007 #

Mine are on their way today...all over the world!

LMM 09/27/2007 #

OK...that is probably the fastest rating I ever got! One has already arrived! Glad you liked it brandedeclipse!

LMM 10/ 5/2007 #

I uploaded a pic of the flag I sent....where are the others? I wanna see!

threesweetpeas 10/ 7/2007 #

Thanks 3Sweet! I really enjoyed making these! I hope we get another round going to build our strings!

twobluecrows 10/ 7/2007 #

Ack! I'm late in my own hosted swap! I'm sorry, and have sent an explanation e-mail to my partners--no excuse!! They will go out in the next couple of days, so please, just be patient with me! Cyn

Although I have yet to receive a wish flag from this swap :) I am up for a second round. These were great to make and I would love to have a long string of flags made by others to hang in my studio space.
