Mask Defined: --1. a covering for all or part of the face, worn to conceal one's identity. 2. a grotesque or humorous false face worn at a carnival, masquerade, etc. 3. anything that disguises or conceals; disguise; pretense. 4. any protective covering for the face or head. 5. a person wearing a mask; masker. 6. to disguise or conceal; hide; dissemble. 7. to cover or shield a part of (a design, picture, etc.) in order to prevent reproduction or to protect the surface from the colors used, as in working with painting/printmaking. Please choose your own interpretation of MASK for this project but, please do not feel limited to the defined examples given above.

This swap is for a new printmaking themed postcard series for printmaking artists. Sorry, no prefab stamps please, all blocks/stamps or plates must be handcarved/etched & designed by each participating artist.

Printing may include but, does not exclude, rubber or linoleum, plastic, metal, wood, or foam. Use waterproof/permanent inks or protective fixative/seal for water soluble inks (reminder, these must withstand postal delivery to your partners). You may like to illustrate, paint, or color your postcards & block prints to enhance the front & backside of the cards (depending on the printing method you choose to use & artistic preference), freedom of expression, creativity, technique, & style is up to the artist (sender).

The design direction & print is the artist's (sender's) choice, as long as your work is influenced by the chosen theme of this swap. Make something you would be proud to trade, add to your mail art collection, or matte & frame, this is for 2 postcards, 1 postcard per partner. Note: These projects may be made from the same stencil, block, plate, etc. These may be identical or you may like to decorate these differently, different colors, you may like to add acrylic painting, ink wash, watercolored background, or add illustrations, etc. etc. Freedom of creativity is up to each artist (sender).

Newbies with well filled out profiles are welcome. Providing links to your work is encouraged for newbies & seasoned swappers. 4.9 or higher are welcome, no unexplained 3s or 1s, I will be checking profiles before the swap begins. I will angel if the need arises.

Check in for updates for future printmaking swaps, I shall also be providing links to future Printmaking Postcard Themed swaps in description section in the near future.

Thank you for your participation & I would be happy to answer any questions that you may have about this swap or this series.

do you have any illustrated ideas for this?

izohgore 09/16/2010 #

Hmm would you like me to host an illustrated mask atc swap? :) That would be pretty cool. Btw, you ever want to do some future hosting for the Illustrated & Printmaking Group, let me know. ;)

izohgore 09/17/2010 #

Apologies, now after the email, I understand what you mean. I'll also post here to help future participants: The theme is anything you would personally interpret or define masked or mask. I may go w/the sleepy hallow reference myself, the jack-o-lantern headed nightwatchman. I may also do a mask by itself or partial masked person for the ATC design, I'll dig among some of my art & see if I have a decent mask or masked reference on digital file that I can reduce in file size to post here but, it will be illustrated since I know I do not have a printmaking sample for this theme among my work as of yet.

I have added this to the description to help participants: Mask Defined: --1. a covering for all or part of the face, worn to conceal one's identity. 2. a grotesque or humorous false face worn at a carnival, masquerade, etc. 3. anything that disguises or conceals; disguise; pretense. 4. any protective covering for the face or head. 5. a person wearing a mask; masker. 6. to disguise or conceal; hide; dissemble. 7. to cover or shield a part of (a design, picture, etc.) in order to prevent reproduction or to protect the surface from the colors used, as in working with painting/printmaking. Please choose your own interpretation of MASK for this project but, please do not feel limited to the defined examples given above.

I was speaking to my printmaking instructor this weekend and I may be able to use his studio on the 1st. If I have access to it, I am going to make a Lithograph Mask. Here is to hoping it is available! :-)

izohgore 09/21/2010 #

Oh that is awesome news!!

trollop 10/16/2010 #

dissolvedgirl, can you post a picture of it?

izohgore 10/23/2010 #

@trollop , she mentioned that she didn't have the time to join but, she may still make them when she has the time. I have offered to trade w/her & you were the first person that came to mind that I would ask to participate in a private trade w/her. :)

trollop 10/24/2010 #

I can do a mask trade with her. :)

dissolvedgirl 10/24/2010 #

Thanks Cat for pointing me here, I think in December I will be able to do a private swap with one of you ladies since I plan not to swap a lot that month. I'll check if I can use the studio then.

izohgore 10/25/2010 #

Sounds cool, looking forward!

Did you want to keep it like the swap, 2 partners, right?

dissolvedgirl 10/26/2010 #

Yah. :)

dissolvedgirl 10/26/2010 #

Yeah*
