The idea of this swap is to send as many things to your partner as possible that can fit in a flat rate envelope. This is the $4.95 padded flat rate or the standard medium sized cardboard flat rate envelope $4.95 USPS dimensions: 12 1/2" x 9 1/2". https://www.usps.com/ship/priority-mail-flat.htm You are welcome to send anything you like and here are some good examples:

I'm not sure how much my flat rate envelopes cost... I have the ones that are padded, about 6x8. Is that what you mean?

Can you please provide the dimensions from the USPS site so we know what sizes you are talking about? Maybe links?

what about the small flat rate boxes too? I just feel more comfortable with the cardboard structure it offers.

The small boxes are not the same size as the flat rate envelopes. If you think that you can send your partner a decent amount in that box then go for it but remember that the capacity is smaller in that box.You may also consider using bubble wrap and/or newspaper for fragile items. I added a pic to reflect the flat rate medium stuffed envie!
