Description:

I am not big on holidays, but if pushed to choose a favorite, I would have to say Halloween. Mostly because the decorations are so much fun (and maybe because of The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown).

For this swap, we will be making our partners altered Altoids tins (aka, "mini shrines" or "pocket shrines") in a Halloween theme. Interpret the theme as you wish; you can go more traditional (black & orange, black cats, witches, jack o' laterns, ghosts) or more inspired (dark & stormy nights, Gothic fiction, Edgar Allan Poe, superstitions, creepy dolls). Day of the Dead/Día de los Muertos art is also acceptable. However, do try and keep your creations tasteful and artistic, i.e. no overly gory imagery.

The Rules

  • You are not required to use an actual Altoids tin, however they're just the right size and style and are relatively easy to find. There are blank, metal hinged tins and gift certificate tins of about the same size that will work fine for this project as well. Regular Altoids tins (the 1.76oz size) measure roughly 3¾" long, 2¼" wide & ¾" deep.
  • Decorate your tin inside and out, creating some sort of diorama on the inside. This swap is not for a tin that gets filled with goodies for your partner. All bits and pieces should be firmly attached.
  • You may alter the tin itself as you wish. Unhinge the lid, attach parts to act as legs for it to stand on, attach string to hang it from a wall - whatever you do, create a spooktacular piece of decor your partner will be happy to display.

As always, any questions can be addressed in the comments below, or feel free to PM me. There will be more Halloween themed swaps in the coming weeks.

I've started (one of) mine! It went a lot easier than I thought it would - I imagined the paper being all fiddily and not matching up or sticking well.

Thanks, Lu! I think I've discovered a new addiction.

Watchers: there's quite a bit of you for this - are the swap dates no good? Should I extend the sign-up deadline? I'll admit, I suck at picking dates for swaps. I wanted to make sure there was time enough for this to be received before Halloween. Let me know if there's anything I can change to make this more inviting.
