About Me

Not so active on swapbot lately ... got a couple of BIG projects in the works, so taking a little break ...

Old enough to know better. I live in Vancouver with a (slightly) eccentric Englishman who builds model trains (no, not those ones - these ones are big enough to ride on). So while he's away giving children train rides in the park on weekends, I escape up to my overstuffed and partially-organized studio, enjoying the sunshine (yes, Vancouver does get sunshine occasionally), listening to LastFM and getting up to all sorts of creative no-good.

I co-ordinate a monthly ATC trading group (25-30 people each month) - I plan the design challenges (based on group suggestions) and 2 or 3 times a year I host a collaborative group project for the ATC group, usually a book of some kind.

I also belong to a small art journalling group that meets 4 times a year for creative retreats.

PLEASE NOTE: I never "don't send" - sometimes mail from Canada can be a little slower, but if you didn't get something from me, let me know and I will resend. Also, I rate the day I receive stuff from you, so you'll know as soon as I get it. :)

Inspired by:

Joseph Cornell, Nick Bantock, Timothy Ely, Theo Ellsworth, Shaun Tan, Sara Fanelli, Julie Chen (the book artist), Peter Kiss, Jennifer Maestre, Dale Coupland, Marian Bantjes, Stefan Sagmeister, Randi Parkhurst, Lynda Barry, Edward Gorey, Colin Johnson, Gustavo Aimar, Gennine Zlatkis, Teesha Moore and all the artists that I collaborate with and trade with all the time. :)

Currently working on:

A bunch of stuff, including: * pages for yet another photojournal collaborative * the Sketchbook Project * ATCs for the monthly ATC group * dejunking the studio!

Stuff I love ...

maps ~ anatomy & scientific diagrams ~ stuff sorted by color ~ crows ~ the colours blue & purple ~ star charts & constellations ~ science fiction (but not fantasy) ~ old documents ~ postage stamps ~ house-shaped art ~ learning new techniques ~ passionate about zines, particularly art zines ~ collaborative projects ~ teeny little handmade books ~ mild metal working ~ mixed media (fabric with paper, metal with beads, etc.) ~ stencils and spray paint ~ mmmm, going to have to think of more stuff to add, but that'll do for now. :)

Amused by ...

Amphigorey, Amphigorey Too and Amphigorey Also - 3 giant books of Edward Gorey's work. The man's a genius.

FAQ About Time Travel - a very funny English movie with three guys in a pub struggling to deal with the effects of time travel. Think Back to the Future meets Shaun of the Dead, but without the body count. I PVR'd it, and have now watched it so many times that I'm finally catching all the IN jokes.

George Westerholme singing "Trevor" on YouTube - when Goth love goes bad, it demands a song. Go watch it.

Comment: Woops, seems I forgot to rate you, and that's so impolite when I not only loved your April zine, but 'the houses in the village," to. Your green mesh-y envelope was really cool, how did you do it? thanks so much, Penelope!
Response: Hi Chris ... glad you liked the houses in the village. :) The envelope was made using a gelli plate and someloosely woven textured raffia sheet (difficult to describe ... I think it was originally meant to make giant bows on gift baskets).

Comment: Thanks for the great zine - I love that it's so colourful :D. My sis used to make a thing similar to Zebra cake - it involved soaking choc chip cookies in copious amounts of booze before alternating with whipped cream (also laced with booze) then covering the whole thing with more cream
Response: Thanks! Glad you liked it. I went a bit mad with colulring the text and stuff, but I totally fell in love with those three colours while I was making it, and I couldn't stop myself. :)

Comment: Thanks for the zines. I like the colours and content very much; most of all I like the fact that you said "... his camel was a bit different from..." instead of "different than". Beautiful work! (On everything, not just the grammar)

Dear Penelope, I received a little envelope full of minizines yesterday and receiving something from you always put a big smile on my face. And the content surprised me as well! I absolutely like your little zine tutorials and the original way of some of your zine (two words) which is pretty uncommon and so nice. Thank you so much for everything, you totally made my day! (There is another envelope for you on my desk but I'm slowly making zine and stuff because of school...) Take care! Andreanne

Artmaker's Minizine #7 I realized this weekend that I mindlessly put US forever stamps on all the envelopes. I went to the post office the next day it was open to purchase the right stamp and resent. Sorry for my stupid mistake!

P.S. swap-bot's messaging is being feisty so I commented instead

I really love Ganesh as an octopus, 'cause I hate elephants! Did you draw it yourself? Loving your zines too, "How to secure a husband" really cracked me up! Thanks! xoxo

Thank you for a lovely and unexpected envelope of postal of fun! It was really sweet of you to think of me, and I just loved it! :D The crow story is genius (have it made up as postcards, PLEASE) and I love the button closure on the ticket zine/booklet. You are awesomely talented, and I can't wait to swap with you again soon. :)
