Description:

Magic the Gathering Cards can be purchased in booster packs, containing 1 rare card, 3 uncommon cards, and 11 common cards, in general.

For this swap, you will send your partner a fake booster pack containing 1 rare card, 3 uncommon cards, and 11 common cards. Extra cards are, of course, encouraged but not required!

  • Cards can be from any set of Magic the Gathering. Feel fee to mix and match from sets.
  • Try to randomize the colors as much as possible, it should be a mix of colors, types, etc. like a real booster pack would be.
  • If you don't have a stash of Magic cards, feel free to purchase and send an actual booster pack.
  • Cards are sender's choice within these guidelines. Please don't be picky!!
  • Since this swap is relatively high value, I am going to be selective with screening participants. I will check your ratings and if I am anxious about them I will ban you. Please message me proactively if you are worried about your ratings.

If you have questions, ask me!!

I would probably be willing to do this as a private swap with you if that's your thing, possibly even if you don't meet my requirements to join the swap.

Where do you look to find out if cards are rare or uncommon?...been curious about that for a while.

MeliaMellon 03/ 6/2012 #

Under the picture on the right hand side of the card they have an insignia of set they were from that was either black for common, silver for uncommon and gold for rare. You can also see card by card here: http://gatherer.wizards.com

Lots of old cards don't have rarity symbols, but you can use that link to gatherer to look the card up by name. All cards have been retroactively given a rarity, even without the symbol printed on them.

You can find the rarity ratings listed here on this site:

http://www.2atoms.com/game/magic/cardlist/f.htm

Well, just looking at that site again and I now realize that not all the cards are listed there. Many of the older ones are not there (eg. Doppleganger is not on that list).

Here is a better site:

http://www.blackborder.com/cgi-bin/prices/index.cgi?action=welcome&sid=k882OSMnLk

Just click on the name of the card and it brings up a picture of it, it's rarity, type and other info on it.

For the actual running price of the card Black Border is one of the good sites for getting comparative pricing.

However, gatherer is great for everything but the specific prices, or going rates of the cards. Here is an example as to how this site would work well to help determine the value of the card:

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=159820

If you see below, it shows all the sets this card has participated in, the rarity and at the bottom some frequently answered questions as to the mechanics that the card contains and ways it can interact with other cards under "+ Display Rulings". This should help with this question, but to help with determining the overall value by the weight of its value in play as well.

Both options should work well for determining overall value of the card, as this is included in the pricing, but it is overruled by rarity and the popularity that is determined by use within tournaments.

Hope this info helps :)

Thank you so much! My cards are largely older so that is a huge help.

Our boosters are made and ready! :D

FibreJunky 03/19/2012 #

Okay, you got me. It's not like I don't have a few (ahem) cards just laying around...cough

It's pretty bad, actually. If anyone has any particular Planar Chaos desires, it's almost guaranteed that I'll be able to throw one (or more) of those in there. Just sayin'.

Leashah 03/21/2012 #

Between @Simba and I, our literal inventory (not including basic land, of course, because there are THOUSANDS of those alone) is currently 48,365... er... 48,373, I think.

FibreJunky 04/28/2012 #

Okay...I think I've finally got the, ahem, "booster" pack done. I think I got a little carried away....hope my partner doesn't mind.
