Description:

The main idea is borrowed from @catsandscales who has kindly allowed me to add some of my own adjustments to her original swap. You might want to check that out, too (notice it's a group swap, though!). :)

So... this swap is for the people who are interested in geography and other cultures and would love to learn more in a rather easy way, by getting to know what the flag - an important each country's (state's, region's, etc.) attribute - means historically. What you'll need to do is, send each of your 2 partners a little something that has your country's (...) flag as the main subject on it (that could be a postcard, your taken photo, some souvenir (fridge magnet, perhaps?), a mini flag, something you've crafted neatly?), just make sure it's a high quality thing! Yet nothing too pricey for this one. :)

Now, the teaching part - you'll have to tell your partners about your flag's origin, explain why exactly those colours, images, shapes were chosen, what their meaning is. Try to make your message both informative and interesting. ;)

Since there is more than one partner you'll have I'm allowing only ONE person for EACH FLAG here. I don't want anybody to learn once again about their native land nor to get two partners with the same flag by accident. Thus, the rule of "first come, first served" works in this swap. But please, leave a comment below stating which country you're from (or whatever else you represent), otherwise, the first person from your country (or region, or ...) who writes a comment after all will be counted instead of you. All's clear?

Everyone can join as long as the flag you'll share with us is not yet on the list (and you meet other requirements). I'd say that opens a lot of new doors. ;)

Happy learning then!

In short:

  • send to 2 partners
  • send 1 postcard OR photo OR magnet OR mini flag OR neat handmade thing / etc. with your country's (region's, state's, etc.) FLAG on it as the main theme
  • include an EXPLANATION of what your flag's colours or images on it symbolize
  • ONLY one person for each flag allowed (write in the comments which country (place...) you're from, so that people know what's taken already)
  • at least 5 Type 2 swaps completed (with the matching ratings of 5 for each of those five) + 4.9 or more as your current rating overall

Taken flags of: Lithuania, Australia, United States (+ Arkansas), Canada, Puerto Rico, Slovenia, United Kingdom, Wales, Malaysia, Singapore.

P.S. It's the first time I host a swap, so all and any ideas and advices about what this swap still lacks or something are very welcome. :)

LetsStartARiot 05/16/2012 #

Wales is taken!

SoupLike 05/16/2012 #

@LetsStartARiot Well, with Wales you're kind of challenging me to make a decision... as actually it's known as a part of the UK rather than a country of its own. And the United Kingdom is already taken. However, having in mind that Wales has an entirely different flag (which is excluded from what the Union Jack consists of), I'll say let it be.. [The more, the merrier? ;D]

sagesparrow 05/16/2012 #

I agree, then you can have Scotland too.

SoupLike 05/17/2012 #

@sagesparrow Yeah, but its flag sort of fits in the whole UK flag, too, while Wales's does not. Ahh, that's the problematic part... I'm not sure whether I should allow all states and parts of countries that have their flags to be represented instead of ONLY the countries. I say it's your call. If you (the participants of this swap) are ok with learning about new flags despite the legal terms of what's a country and what's not, so be it. :)

sagesparrow 05/17/2012 #

Yes, it's part of the UK, but has a beautiful yellow flag with a red lion rampant. How about doing a DIFFERENT swap for regional flags, like those of the UK and the states of the US, and regular flags? I wonder if provinces in other countries have their own flags? Like in Finland for example?

SoupLike 05/17/2012 #

@sagesparrow Maybe that's a good idea. Many countries have regional flags. However, some of them are more frequently used than others, therefore, better-known. For example, I've just had to google for any regional flags we have here in Lithuania. xD And, yes, Finland has some, too. I'm not sure whether it's in my interest to go detail that much, but you may host another swap alike if you wish, allowing each and every state participate.

I'll add a slight change to the description. ^^

P.S. maroyau has offered to host #2 for this and it is what I'd be very willing to do in the future (if all goes well with this one, of course), BUT how do you think we could avoid getting partners from the same countries / regions as we'll get now in #1?

sagesparrow 05/17/2012 #

One person per region? I'd be Arkansas...

SoupLike 05/18/2012 #

@sagesparrow You can choose either your state OR your whole country's flag as long as it is not taken yet (which it isn't). Your decision.

zurasayang77 05/18/2012 #

Malaysia taken ;)

sagesparrow 05/20/2012 #

Oh for this swap, I want the country's flag. Another swap for regions?

sagesparrow 05/20/2012 #

Though I could do both. I probably couldn't find a small Arkansas State Flag, but I might be able to find something... I can definitely find a small US flag, as it's so near the 4th of July. Everything in the stores is flags now...

sagesparrow 05/20/2012 #

Oh I see you have me up for Arkansas: OK, I'll do Arkansas AND the US flag. :)

sagesparrow 05/20/2012 #

I found Arkansas!!! Will do both!!!!! :D

SoupLike 05/22/2012 #

@sagesparrow I can see you're pretty excited about this swap. :D Ok, since there aren't any people to take your place for either Arkansas or the USA flag yet, you're free to share both with us. Of course, you do understand, it's not obligatory to send a double package, right? You're just being a really great and generous swapper. I'm sure your partners will appreciate that. :) Or you can introduce one partner with one flag and the other with another. Again - your choice on this one. :)

sagesparrow 05/22/2012 #

Thanks!!!!

sagesparrow 05/22/2012 #

Cause I only have 1 Arkansas, but 2 US.

lordofstones 05/29/2012 #
