QnT Diamonds & Jewels quilt blocks #1

2-19-14 thru 3-19-14

These blocks are very easy to make and fun to collect. They look like snowballs with brightly colored corners, except we are calling them “Diamonds” instead of snowballs, and the 4 corners are jewel toned small print fabric pieces we are calling “Jewels”.

At our quilting bee at church we are making one of these quilts as a wedding present for a young couple getting married this year.

Instructions:

For the center Diamonds we will start with a 6 ½ inch white piece of fabric which can be all white or white-on-white print (good quality not see-thru-thin fabric)

Then for the corner jewels cut four 2 ½ inch squares from brightly colored jewel toned-small print fabrics (the more variety of small jewel toned prints and colors for these 2 ½ inch squares the better)

Use a pencil and ruler to draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of all four jewel squares.

Step 3: Place the jewel squares on each of the four corners of the white diamond fabric square. Right sides together

Step 4: Sew across each of the four pencil lines, backstitching at the beginning and end of each seam.

Step 5: Trim excess fabric ¼” away from seams Press jewel fabric away from white diamond fabric, and voila! A Diamond and Jewels block 6.5”.

We will be making 4 each of these Diamond & Jewels blocks for two partners for a total of 8 blocks mailed each round. Be sure to make a set for yourself as well.

Suggested Jewel tones: bright blues, greens, turquoise, aqua, reds, golds, yellows, purples, oranges, just about any color but no black, white, gray or brown and no pastels

I’m excited to gather enough of these Diamond and Jewels blocks to make a quilt of my own!

Questions are welcome, please post below or send me a PM.

Love it! I'll be joining. I seen a quilt made with these and simple 9 square blocks alternating like this which is what I'll be using these blocks for. :-D

Thank you @ABackwoodsLife If we get enough interest we may shorten the time between rounds or increase the number of blocks to send.

each set of four blocks should be different if at all possible

Is there a link where I can see this - I am a visual person!

perkl8r 02/ 1/2014 #

I don't have a link at this time but will see about getting one...and if any one else can find one please feel free to add it. thank you!

I hope using batiks for the jewels is okay. I've got a lot of small batik pieces I could use up this way -- I'd use the jewel colors, not the pastels.

You're so welcome--I'm always happy to help! :)

perkl8r 02/ 5/2014 #

yes, batiks are fine as long as they aren't full of the "nono" colors of black, gray, browns....bright is beautiful a little white mixed in with your bright colors is ok but most of the corners must be bright jewel toned colors

perkl8r 02/ 5/2014 #

the picture above shows all four corners the same WE ARE NOT DOING THAT, we are making all four corners different colors but other than that the picture above is right on

also our centers are diamond white (white on white print is fine too)

thank you! Enjoy!

Just trying to plan ahead since I don't get to the craft store often... Are the colors for the upcoming swaps for this block also going to be bright jewel tones? And white centers?

perkl8r 02/16/2014 #

Yes, they sue are! Thank you @ABackwoodsLife for your question.

@ABackwoodsLife I love the 9 patch mixed in with this block, it makes a lovely wreath effect. I plan to do that! Thank you for sharing the link.
