Soon it will that time of year once again -- time for the groundhog to make his annual appearance! This swap is historically significant for me not only because of the folklore tradition but also because I hosted an extremely similar exchange here on Swap-bot each year from from 2007 until 2010 (which is why this one is called #5) and found it delightful. You will have three partners. You are to send a greeting card or postcard commemorating Groundhog Day to each one. The card may be handmade or store-bought, humorous or serious, in an envelope or not (if it's a postcard), but it should reflect the GROUNDHOG tradition (as opposed to Imbolc, Candlemas, or other observances on or around Feb. 2nd). If you choose to and are able to, it is permissable to include something additional that is related to the occasion, but sending a card is all that is required or expected. Partners will be assigned on January 21. Cards should be mailed soon after that to ensure their arrival before Groundhog Day on February 2nd. Groundhog Day cards received after Groundhog Day are not much fun at all. A minimum rating average of 4.7 is required to participate. (If your rating is slightly below that and you still want to participate, pm me and we can talk.) Unrated newbies, you are allowed as long as your profile is fabulously filled out and you pm me before the sign-up deadline with a promise that you will not flake. Potential flakers of any type, please abstain. I reserve the right to ban anyone for any reason. From Wikipedia: "Groundhog Day is a traditional festival celebrated in the United States and Canada on February 2. It is a cross-quarter day, midway between the Winter Solstice and the Vernal Equinox. "In traditional weather lore, if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and fails to see its shadow because the weather is cloudy, winter will soon end. If the groundhog sees its shadow because the weather is bright and clear, it will be frightened and run back into its hole, and the winter will continue for six more weeks." |
