Private swap #3 HSTS Half Square Triangles

9-27-20 thru 10-31-20

--2 partners

--5 HSTS to each partner

--total 10 HSTS mailed and a matching set of 10 for you to keep

Prep:

Pick (from your stash) or cut 10 different print 5-inch X 5-inch fabric charms of 100% cotton quilting fabric. Any colors you want.

Cut TEN 5-inch X 5-inch white fabric charms (also 100% cotton quilting fabric)

On the back of each white charm (with a pencil and using a ruler) draw a diagonal line from the upper left-hand corner to the lower right-hand corner.

Making Half-Square Triangles HSTS:

  1. take 1 white charm and 1 print fabric charm of equal size (this swap: 5-inches by 5-inches)

  2. place the 2 charms in a stack right-sides together with pencil line on top – pin together

  3. stitch one-quarter inch seam on either side of the drawn line

  4. cut on drawn line - this yields you 2 HSTS’s (one for a partner and one for you)

  5. press open both HSTS

  6. repeat this for all 10 sets

SQUARE UP the HSTS (example: trim them down to an even 4 ½” X 4 ½”) (google this if you need more help, because a picture of squaring up a quilt block is much easier to understand than a written description.) You will need a rotary cutter and a clear plastic quilting ruler at least 5-inches by 5-inches to accomplish SQUARING UP these blocks. I use a 6 ½ inch square ruler.

The key to squaring up HSTS blocks is to put the diagonal line found on the ruler over the top of the diagonally stitched line on each of your HSTS. I trim 2 sides at a time, then rotate the block and do the other 2 sides.

You will end up with 2 stacks of 10 HSTS’s (4 ½-inches X 4 ½-inches square).

One stack is for you to keep, the other stack you will divide up into 2 groups of 5 each and send one group off to each partner.

Enjoy and swap-on!

The picture shows all the HSTS the same set of colors, but for our swap we will use 10 different prints for one side and white or tone-on-tone white fabric for the other sides.
