Description:

3 ATCs to 2 Members, 6 ATCs total. This is an international swap.

I am starting a series of ATC swaps based on the techniques taught in Bernie Berlin’s book “Artist Trading Cards Workshop: Create, Collect, Swap published in December 2006 by North Light Publishers. I submitted this idea to the forums here on Swap-bot and there has been interest expressed so here is the first swap.

If you already own this book perhaps you are itching to try some new techniques. Maybe you would like to see how others interpret this technique, so let’s swap ATCs with each other.

And if you don’t yet own this book and you want to learn some new and interesting techniques then perhaps you’d consider buying the book and joining our swap!

Before you commit to this swap please already own the book or have access to a copy from your library. Make sure you have the necessary tools and ingredients on hand before the swap closes. It would not be fair to sign up then not make the ATCs and say “I don’t own the book or the right materials.

For this first swap in the series we will try the technique “Paint On Paper Towel featured on page 16-17. The necessary ingredients for this swap are: paintbrush, paper towel, Lumiere paints or other paints or dyes (I have used Easter Egg dye left over and also alcohol inks and watercolor paints), gel medium, and scissors. It is your choice to finish the ATC with collgaed elements or with rubber stamped images (both ways are depicted in the book’d directions or sample ATCs).

Due to the nature of this book being copyrighted and the fact that the whole book is based on teaching the reader art techniques I do not feel comfortable posting the full directions of this technique online as it could very well be against the law (a copyright violation).

The book is fantastic. If you don’t yet own it, you can purchase this book online through big bookseller sites or see if your local craft store or rubber stamp store is selling it. The ISBN-10 is 1581808488 and the ISBN-13 is 139781581808483. The book was published in the United State of America. I have no idea what the availability of this book is to foreign countries, but the swap is open to International members so long as you have the book and the materials and want to participate. (Someone told me that anyone can buy online from book vendors but will just pay more in shipping fees.)

Please allow ample time to make these ATCs. I have found through my own experience that when learning a new technique and when using new materials mistakes abound and errors are bound to happen in the experimentation process. So please give yourself enough time to make these ATCs so you can send out high quality work as well as send the ATCs out by the deadline.

Now the rules for who can join. Due to problems with “flakers on Swap-bot I have tightened my hosting requirements which as resulted in a very high compliance rate (hooray). I will not accept newbies to Swap-bot (sorry)---you must have at least three ratings in your file to join--there are many ATC swaps for newbies that you can join in order to get rated by your swap partners. A person can have no more than one “no send on their file. The minimum rating is 4.7. As host I also can choose to ban anyone for any other reason that I see fit, that is my right.

The date to send the swap by is a rule of this swap. Please follow the rules.

You are free to join this swap and not join future swaps in this series. You are free to not join this one but to join other swaps in this series. You don’t have to sign up for all of them, just the ones you want to do and the ones that you have time to do!

Now that the rules are out of the way I wish you luck and fun while trying this technique.

If you want to read more about this book I have published a book review of it on my blog which you can read here.

Hi Christine - this is such a great idea for a swap and I wish I could join! I'm too booked up right now, but I'll keep an eye out for your future swaps. We're doing a discussion of the book over at Artist Trading Card Forums http://www.atcards.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6336

All right, Miss Christine. I bought the book at Borders Saturday! Thanks for hosting this techniques swap!

MerriAmelie 05/22/2007 #

i got this book for mother's day!! can't wait to try out some of the techniques...

BetsyG 05/23/2007 #

I got the book at a stamping convention last weekend, and then today I read your swap. What luck. As I perused the book I found techniques I'd love to try, and now I will be forced to try them instead of wishing! Thanks for the opportunity

Everyone have fun with this!

My backgrounds are made and now I need to finish them off. Due to humidity mine took three days to dry! My layers were thick though.

Note I am doing a series of these swaps and so far have three listed with a staggering date of one week apart. Everyone keep an eye out for the other swaps I am hosting.

I don't know if you've realized but by clicking on someone's profile in the right area of the page it shows all the swaps they are hosting. That might be an easy way to find the other ATC workshop swaps I'm hosting.

Tonight I worked on and totally finished three. This was fun and I am excited.

I did the background as stated in the directions and they are pink and other light pastel colors. I collaged an image on top. I used silver embossing powder all around the edge. They are Marilyn Monroe photos (I love her) and I think they came out great. The silver with the pink tones looks terrific.

The hard part was coming up with a nice image to collage on top. I have no clue what I'll use for the other ATCs.

Hope the rest of you are having fun with this.

Moominbrooke 06/ 2/2007 #

I got the book! Count me in.

Alphenstamp and KVDesigns - your cards are done and going out in the morning mail. Let me know when you get them. Thanks

Moominbrooke 06/ 4/2007 #

Wow. That made some cool backgrounds. I almost hate to put anything on top of them. Almost...

user4831 06/ 5/2007 #

Brooke and Diane your cards are on their way!!!

user7837 06/ 5/2007 #

My daughter and I worked on this technique as well as the other 2 that are being offered on Swap-bot. I will be honest and say that I liked this one the least. I found the papertowel to be a bit difficult to work with. It would be really helpful if the book stated the exact products used. sigh. I hope my partners like theirs.
They will be going in the mail on Wed. KV

ChristineMM 06/ 8/2007 #

I hope everyone is having fun with this swap.

I need to put the finishing touches on my last ones then these will go out in the mail.

I see that only 5 of the 21 have sent their ATCs out at this point.

Remember the deadline is June 12th.

Have fun experimenting and creating!

ChristineMM 06/ 8/2007 #

KVDesigns what products are you curious about? Paints? Gel mediums?

I use Golden brand acrylic gel medium in soft, either gloss or matte, I go back and forth.

My thing with these backgrounds was it took a lot of gel medium to keep them stuck down. Some of them took four days to dry out completely.

Some of the backgrounds are thick. The surface is also nearly impossible to rubber stamp upon, if the layers were made with torn and layered pieces not just a single layer, I found.

FarStarr 06/ 8/2007 #

I use mod-podge for paper (with the blue label) in matte finish for all my tissue paper, paper towel, paper napkin, and tea bag attaching. Works great and I get it at Michael's with a 40% off coupon.

user8157 06/10/2007 #

I have had no luck finding Lumiere paint -- wouldn't you know that Michaels doesn't carry it any more -- if you use regular acrylic paint, will it work with this technique if you use the right gel medium (and if so, which one works well?)?

I don't much like the color quality of the other fabric paints I've found, so if it's possible to make a nicer acrylic paint work, I'd rather do that.

I did use Jacquard's store locator on their website and found one store near me that carries Lumiere; sadly, though, I didn't find the store locator online until 4:22 and the store closes at 4 on Saturdays. It's not open on Sunday, either.

and now I'm hoping, after reading the comments, that the paint will dry by the 12th!

FarStarr 06/10/2007 #

Hi Sacratomato, I use plain old, cheap, three for a dollar acrylics for this and they work fine. I do have real artist's acrylics, but I haven't used them for this. I also haven't had a problem with drying. The mod-podge matte for paper dries pretty quick..It is the one with the blue label.

FridaKahlo 06/10/2007 #

A little late i know, but the Lumiere paints are in with the fabric paint in AC Moore. No where in the book does it say that it's a textile paint, that little hint of info would have made them easier to find. I'm finishing up my last set of cards so i can mail them monday to my partners.

redwing480 06/10/2007 #

I don't know if you have one nearby but, I've also seen the Lumiere paint at Joann's etc, it's stocked over by the fabric paint, . I didn't find in their online store though.

FarStarr 06/10/2007 #

I'm pretty sure Lumiere makes paint that is not textile paint as well. I figured that was what the book was talking about.

My cards are going out tomorrow. I posted a picture on my flickr site.

TwistersMom 06/11/2007 #

Hi all My cards will be sent on time, I have had a bit of trouble with the finishing touches, drying time more than I suspected it would be, but I will mail on the due date, tuesday. this was fun! Sage

Artistic 06/11/2007 #

I did my ATCs yesterday (Sunday) and yes, the drying at each stage took longer than I anticipated. But it was fun. Mine will go postal tomorrow to my partners.

FarStarr 06/11/2007 #

Cards went out to Cazr and Brooke today...

ChristineMM 06/12/2007 #

Some of mine were made with alcohol ink on paper towel. Some were made with watercolor paint on paper towel. Some were made with left over Easter Egg dye on paper towel (made back at Easter then saved to use them later).

I could not find Lumiere at my local AC Moore. I did find it at a rubbber stamp shop but it was too expensive for me to buy at full retail. I am going to recheck AC Moore now that you said that, and also Joanne's, both places have a 40 or 50% off coupon that I could use.

My ATCs were finished this morning and are going out in today's mail to: Reb and Artistic

I hope you like them!

redwing480 06/12/2007 #

I finished my cards, I used liquid metallic watercolor paint on the paper towels and mod podge to stick the pieces to the cards. I thought the cards dried rather quickly, I did them in the evening and they were dry by the next morning. I did enjoy using this technique and can see myself using it again.

Cards are going out today for Janet Burns and Rakesha

If anybody would like more information about the Lumiere paints, go to jacquardproducts.com this is the company that makes them

TwistersMom 06/12/2007 #

My cards made it in the mail! whew! I had a bit of a setback this morning with my cat getting on my craft table and scattered my cards all dried and ready to go, onto a babywipe i had used and was still wet, so a couple of them got wet and I had to blow dry them to put them in the mail! lol but they made it..

MerriAmelie 06/12/2007 #

my cards are finally in the mail today... i also had a hard time with this technique and altered it a litte to get some results i liked!! i used regular acrylic paints that were metallic that i got at joannes, they drying time wasn't so bad... i also finished one of my cards with a top coat of diamond glaze... and it gave a very pretty shiny finish that i wanted!! hope Artistic and ChristineMM enjoy their cards :)

Artistic 06/12/2007 #

My ATCs are en route to my partners!

Moominbrooke 06/12/2007 #

Belle the Cat and Sagewind- ATCs on their way!

user7837 06/12/2007 #

My cards went out today! Enjoy! KV

ChristineMM 06/13/2007 #

Cindy your ATCs arrived. I really love them. I agree with you about these taking up a lot of gel medium. One other problem I had with mine is that I had to use so much gel medium that some of them curled up a bit, they were on 140 lb. watercolor paper. I like the look of these but the drying time of 3-4 days for mine is a bit much, also. So between the long time to dry, the possible curling factor and the expense of the gel medium I probably won't do this technique frequently.

user6095 06/15/2007 #

ChristineMM, Thanks for the wonderful ATCs. I love the embossing idea. I will try that the next time.

I bought the Lumiere paint to use on my cards. The paper towel really soaked it up so I didn't have to use very much of the gel medium. I loved the results of this technique but it was a little time consuming.

Thanks again, Reb

user8157 06/17/2007 #

My cards finally went out yesterday morning. Thank you to my partners for being so understanding about the lateness (multiple family issues that ended up spilling over into this week, etc.).

I ended up finding Lumiere paints at an AWESOME local art supply store. I am glad I had gone to the Jacquard site and found the name and address of this store, because they have an incredible supply of paints, inks, pencils, pens, etc. etc. etc., and an even more incredible supply of fantastic art papers. But I digress.

The two sets of ATCs I've gotten so far have looked completely different from my final Lumiere-painted product. It's been interesting to see how different they are. I ended up being a little flummoxed by how to handle the backgrounds I made, as I'm not much into collage (thankfully, I did get the gel medium mentioned in the Techniques book; this stuff is fantastic for collage). The backgrounds were really imposing so they did call for something like collage so the background wouldn't end up being the final image. I'm not sure if I like the ATCs I produced.

Anyway, all that gel medium and the paints did take some time to dry, and then had some curling issues, so I had to weight it all under a heavy book with dumbells atop it all. It WAS time-consuming and I really, really, really wish I had taken Christine's advice to allow plenty of time to make these ATCs.
