Description:

I don't know about you, but I often find myself using the same adjectives over and over again. I need an adjective infusion!

So here's an easy swap. Take a novel and open to page 20. Make a list of the first 20 adjectives you find. If your author isn't prone to description, you might need to go on to page 21 or 22--that's okay. Put your list on a postcard along with the title of the novel, its author, and your name/username. Then send it out--that's it!

Please use a novel for this swap; I'm thinking that prose fiction will give us a good range of adjectives of many types. Any genre or literary period is fine. If your novel is in a language other than English, please include an English translation.

You'll have 2 partners for this swap; you can use the same novel/list for both cards or not. It's up to you.

Your postcard can be store-bought or home-made. For this swap it's okay to send a hand-made postcard in an envelope to protect it.

And finally: 1) Newbies with completed profiles are welcome. 2) Anyone with a rating lower than 4.5 will be dropped. 3) This is an international swap.

Let's have fun with adjectives!

WOW - this is the coolest idea for a swap! (I use that adjective a lot - gotta come up with some new ones! lol) Great idea!

beckra 05/17/2007 #

Glad you like the idea, chelle523--I think it should be fun!

inky 05/20/2007 #

Neat swap! I'm an avid reader (my mom's gift to me....she read Gone with the Wind in 2 day...plus taking care of 4 kids, cooking, laundry, cleaning house, etc!). I don't read that fast, but do love coming across new words to use....adjectives in particular! Just joined. ")

Bless you for a quick, easy one! And I read ALOT. As a newbie (aohell-user) I just was AUTO-dropped from a newbie swap because the email computers wouldn't talk to one another. I believe that issue has been resolved and NEEDed another swap to replace that one -- for a rating to get into another one. (This place is really addictive!) Cad

cooan 05/22/2007 #

I think this is a fantastic swap idea!

Please ONLY put my postcard in an envelope if it's handmade. :) I actually prefer my postcards to come weathered!

But if it's handmade, we don't need to clutter up the machines with bits falling off. ;)

user8335 05/23/2007 #

Love it! I even have the perfect novel in mind...

user5215 05/23/2007 #

What a unique idea! I can't wait to get my postcards.

cooan 05/23/2007 #

totally ready for this swap!

MARY 05/24/2007 #

This is a great idea. I can't wait to get started, and to receive my lists!

hyperoma 05/24/2007 #

what if the first 20 adjectives consist those that we often use, say "good" or "pretty"?

beckra 05/24/2007 #

i'm glad so many people are signed up (and psyched) for this swap!

hyperoma--you're right that some common adjectives are likely to be in our lists; i'd say that you should list them as they come. different authors will have different adjective personalities/vocabularies, and it will be interesting to see which authors use surprising or obscure adjectives and which use fairly common ones.

RobynNichole 05/24/2007 #

I have a stupid question... What if our writing is large. I tend to write "big". Would it be ok to either send on 2 postcards if it doesn't fit?? This is my first swap!! I am so energized and I already have my book picked out.

beckra 05/24/2007 #

robyn nichole: if you can't fit all 20 adjectives on a single card, sending 2 cards is just fine. thanks for joining in!

auntouch 05/25/2007 #

i Have mine all ready to go, waiting for partners. easy and fun.

Annette 05/25/2007 #

Didn't get my partner?

beckra 05/26/2007 #

annette: i can't assign partners until the morning after the swap closes. they're ready now!

Annette 05/26/2007 #

Kelli 05/29/2007 #

Hi I am new to this and I have my cards ready to go for my swap partners but I just read that a different person is sending my card and I am confused. Does this mean the people who receive mine, are different to the people who send to me? This is fine, but I'm not sure how it works and I'm worried I made a mistake.

Nurse4U2NV 05/30/2007 #

Kelli...no mistake made. Different people do receive yours. Partners are picked randomly. So go ahead and send them out. :)

Kelli 05/30/2007 #

Ok well I have sent both my cards out to the USA to Jen.L and ViveItalia. They were posted in a small rural Tasmanian post box yesterday afternoon. They have a long travel ahead of them so I wouldn't hold your breath for them. Not too sure how long it will take for them to reach you! But they are on their way.

RobynNichole 05/31/2007 #

kwood and artistic your post cards are winging their way from Texas. Man it was a hunt to find 2 cent stamps.

CADLady 06/ 6/2007 #

Ruthie in Israel:

That's the only information I have on you. The p/c is lovely and I'd like to "rate" it, but I can't figure out who you are.

Can you post a comment, please? Otherwise, you'll just have to accept my warm THANK YOU here and get no rating for the swap. :(

CAD LADY

CADLady 06/ 6/2007 #

NEVERMIND. sorry. newbie. still figuring out how to USE the site's details.

Ruthy, you did a great job on that p/c. And, given how far it traveled, it was in amazingly good condition. It's so PRETTY -- like a big ATC!! THANK YOU. I'm putting it in a Very Special Place. (great adjectives, too, btw) Hugs!

SummerLion 06/ 9/2007 #

Received Isolde's PC today, complete with book review and list including the adjective: tangential. Yay!

MAM 06/10/2007 #

Kelli 06/19/2007 #
