Description:

Everyone here speaks English. Why don't we try something a little different and inexpensive. Since I was a kid I've always been interested in learning different languages. And I think it's something cool. Now, I can speak two other languages and still thinking if I want to learn one more language.

Get a nice (stationery or note card) and translate the list of words/ phrases/ sentence into a different language. You choose whatever language. It can be French, Italian, Arabic etc.

If ever the chosen language has characters such as Japanese try to write the characters and also write how it is read. For example (Japanese) ____________。 (Watashi wa your name desu.)Or if you can't write or copy the characters just write how it is read. If you don’t know any other languages, search over the net as there are so many on-line dictionary. Feel free to add more translations of words or phrases.

Here's the list of words/ phrases/ sentences to be translated:

  1. My name is _________________.
  2. How are you?
  3. Good morning.
  4. Good evening.
  5. Thank you.
  6. I love you.
  7. Goodbye.
  8. Yes
  9. No
  10. What time is it?
  11. One
  12. Two
  13. Three
  14. Four
  15. Five
  16. Six
  17. Seven
  18. Eight
  19. Nine
  20. Ten
  21. Happy
  22. Sad
  23. Bag
  24. Money
  25. Fruits
  26. Vegetables
  27. Pencil
  28. Girl
  29. Boy
  30. Family

o If you receive the letter with all the 30 words/ phrases translated, give your partner a 5. Feel free to give something to your partner, however, it is not necessary. If your partner gave you a little something extra, give that person heart.

Open to people who's been rated 4+, newbies are also welcome as long as you have completed your profile. (Please do not forget to include your username at the end of your paper.)

is this sent thru email or postal?

Ann 06/28/2007 #

thru postal

user6635 06/28/2007 #

Classy Chica, it appears to be via snail mail, as the instructions suggest a nice note card.

hyperoma 06/28/2007 #

I had a lot of fun doing this swap.

user7866 06/28/2007 #

I speak English and French fluently (though with a heavily aussie accent - My Daddy cringes)

I could probably get by with my German, Japanese and Thai

My partner can choose one of those languages.

Wait... Does Aussie Slang count as a language? Gday Mate, Howsgarn? x

kaylarose2 06/29/2007 #

i can speak Dutch and Italian not perfect but enough to get me thought my holidays when i go there most years

Ann 06/29/2007 #

I don't think that Aussie slang is considered as a language :-) however if you want to share it in your letter that would be very interesting

For those who want to check out other languages, this site might be helpful. http://www.word2word.com/coursead.html

keroleen73 06/29/2007 #

I speak German, English, French, Italian, Japanese and...err, Latin ^_^;

I'd prefer it if my partner(s) typed their letter, that way it's easier to read (and my Japanese hand-writing isn't as neat as the computer font).

SimplyShnookly 07/12/2007 #

athenasowl 07/12/2007 #

I speak Portuguese and English fluently, and in the past decade I have studied French, German, Latin, Dutch, Spanish and Catalan. Even though I don't speak any of these fluently (though I've almost mastered the art of speaking portug-spanish :-P), I'd love to be sent other languages than these, if possible.

Only English here!

MarleneCampos 07/12/2007 #

I speak portuguese, english, french and spanish.

Miharu 07/12/2007 #

Just an idea, I know letters are pronounced differently in every language (at least most!) so maybe for each word if people could include a rough pronunciation in brackets, or maybe as a list on the back, however people want. I know it would definitely be helpful since it's no good to learn the word if you can't pronounce it :) Like I said, just an idea.

Saor 07/12/2007 #

I speak English, French and Irish(Gaelic) and could manage simple Italian too.

edlefevre 07/12/2007 #

My Spanish is pretty good. That's the only language I know more than a few words in (other than English).

PisceanMama 07/13/2007 #

I can try to put pronunciations on mine, but it's all going to depend on whether I can find a site that actually as the pronunciations with it. crosses fingers hopefully

HappyCactus 07/17/2007 #

shining star and pinkflamingo - your letters are on their way!! Let me know when you get them!

dreaminginred 07/17/2007 #

Letters for Ester and Iam thinking have been put into the post. Enjoy!

keroleen73 07/18/2007 #

AthenasOwl and Puchita - Your lists are on their way :)

boatbird 07/19/2007 #

I've got to how all the letters are pronounced as Greek has its own alphabet! And some of the things I have written are Cypriot/ informal rather than the 'proper' way to say it! So things will be written in Greek script, translated into how you say it in Greek and what it means in English :)

PisceanMama 07/19/2007 #

Cheryl and andrea, yours are on their way!

thiswillbegone 07/20/2007 #

Rachel and Marjorie, yours are on their way! This was a lot of fun!
