Description:

I love scavenger hunts, and thought it would be fun to try and find books that fit certain criteria—colors, words, symbols, images, etc. I will continue this swap with a different set of scavenger hunt items each month.

I've had a lot of fun with these the past several months, and really appreciate everyone who has participated!!! :)

For this swap, you will send your partner a book, from your own collection or from a used bookstore, thrift shop, etc. that contains all three items from the following list. In honor of Earth Day (April 22nd), this month's scavenger hunt items all have a link (tenuous or otherwise) :) to the “Three Rs”…

  1. Reduce— Books must have no more than 175 pages. Think short novels, Young Adult, children’s, gifty books… No War and Peace or Twilight for this one, sorry! ;)

  2. Reuse— Books must have some kind of marking or “found object” in them that indicates they’ve been used (and loved!) before. The marking can someone’s name written on the inside cover, highlighted passages or little notes in the margin, a child’s scribbles, (as long as they don’t render the book unreadable), etc. A found object can be a bookmark someone helpfully left behind, a shopping list or other note tucked between the pages, a library check-out card pocket if it’s a discarded library book, etc. I suppose it would be easy enough to “fake” any of these things, but where’s the fun in that?? :)

  3. ReCYCLE—an image or mention of a bicycle must appear somewhere within the pages of the book.

Books can be any type or genre—fiction, biography, self-help, cook books, how-to, children’s, little “gifty” books, etc. Sender’s choice, but feel free to check your partner’s profile to get ideas or avoid specific dislikes.

To recap: you will have ONE partner and send them ONE book, but it needs to have all three scavenger hunt items represented in/on it (fewer than 175 pages, marking/found object, bike). Feel free to send Media Mail (particularly if your book is quite heavy), but do not include anything else in the package, other than the note tucked inside the book!

For this particular swap, obviously the books will be used, but must be readable and clean.

PLEASE include a note describing where all three items can be found (if it’s not obvious), and anything you’d like to add about the book, your reaction to it (if you've read it), etc. Half the fun of book-swapping is discussing the books with our friends! :)

Unfortunately, I have to make this one US/Canada/Mexico only… mailing books overseas, especially heavy ones, can be super- expensive. :( But feel free to start an international version if you’d like!

The legal mumbo-jumbo: No recent ones or threes— please take care of your old swaps before signing up for new ones! Newbies (with less than 5 rated snail mail swaps) welcome with fully filled-out profile, but PLEASE PM me before signing up! I will automatically ban you if you skip this step! Please don’t sign up unless you’re committed to sending!!!

Enjoy!

Can the "reuse" part be the name of a used book store stamped inside?

hydro75 03/13/2010 #

Absolutely! :)

@MandaFace - I sent you a PM, and it looks like you got it, so go ahead and join if you want!

StaceyLeigh 03/23/2010 #

hey i'm brand spankin new too and have no idea what a pm means. i haven't actually swapped anything yet, but i live with two people that do it frequently and can vouch for me as being the biggest book nerd ever. please let me join? this sounds really fun and gives me an excuse to wander around old bookstores :)

@StaceyLeigh - I left a comment on your profile.

@newbies in general-- I'm happy to have you join, but I would strongly suggest familiarizing yourself with the site a bit before jumping into swaps. Being able to PM and do other simple tasks on the site are a big part of swapping... hope that doesn't sound b****y, just sayin'... :)

jenzbees 03/26/2010 #

oops I spelled my own name wrong when I PM'd you, hydro75! It's Jenzbee-what a newbie!

jenzbees 03/26/2010 #

I mean, Jenzbees-it must be late at night!

Marata 03/27/2010 #

I want to join but I can't figure out a book with a bike mentioned in it.
