I am a late-thirties eclectic woman…purely Southern…born in Tennessee, raised in Georgia and living in Alabama. I’m married to a techie, also a Southerner. We live with our 23 year old son and a toy poodle named Doodle. (I know, the math doesn’t exactly add up on the ages. Biologically, he’s our nephew; he moved in with us when he was 16, and we adopted him. …and, we couldn’t be more proud of him if we had “birthed? him. :-)
Raised by my math teaching Mama and my Sci-Fi reading Dad, when I went to school, I majored in Education/Language Arts, then English in grad school, but I was never quite flakey enough to be a typical English major. (…not that I mean “flakey? in an ugly way. I’ve just always been more Vulcan than Hippie…if that makes sense.)
I taught English (7-12 and college) for years and loved it. After an unexpected geographical move, however, (family obligations) I started working in technical support. Surprisingly, but logically, the two fields merged well. Now, I’m a corporate technical trainer and technical writer. I get to read, research and write for a living every day producing highly technical procedural and educational materials (print and multimedia).
I love the English language, literature and even (amazingly) grammar. I can carry a tune in a bucket, play keyboard and brass instruments with some basic skill and enjoy every aspect of the language arts, but I never felt strong attraction to tactile arts or crafts until my math teaching Mama showed me a clock made of geometrically arranged CDs. I was hooked, and if I can ever find the commercial again, or find a pattern, I fully intend to make the AOL CD fish/wall sculpture.
