We have brought my lemon tree, peppers and other plants back to Larsen Bay, from my greenhouse on Amook Island, to over winter them. At the VA, where I worked in Tomah, WI, they grew hibiscus over the thermal pipe between the buildings. Their flowers were as big as dinner plates and all colors! Thanks so much! Response: The alcohol markers are super birght and easily blended BUT they are not lightfast. I should do an experiment putting a card in full sun south window half covered just to see the effect.

I'll be on the lookout for blooming peonies. Every week there's a new plant or tree blossoming. I'm stopping at lilac bushes for a snoot full of fragrance. :)

Response: Gelli plates are fun. You can make your own with unflavored gelatin and glycerin, not as sturdy, but more sensitive. You also need acrylic paint and a brayer.

Response: It's the nature of the paint. Daniel Smith watercolors has some with special qualities like mica. I don't know how the "interference" pigments work, but they color shift and really only show up over dark colors. I do have some "iridescent medium" for water color (mainly mica, I think) but I haven't used it...yet. I think it's time to break it out.

Response: I just sprayed it to fix it so the ink wouldn't smear and the wc would wash off in the rain. I just used Utrecht ultra-clear acrylic coating. For my good watercolors, I use brush-on watercolor varnish, matvar is one brand that's pretty good.

Comment: I had to think deeply about the use of the envelope I sent you. Now I know again ;-) I always use simple white envelopes to roll my brayer. And I don't mind about re-using it. Actually, I love the one you send me for this swap. It looks and feels almost antique and the seal with the butterfly is amazing! So (if you don't mind) I like to use little pieces in other projects.

Response: I found that my home-made gelatin plate caught the lace details better than the gelli plate. The paper used also makes a tremendous difference - plain cardstock and printing paper (arches cover, bfk rives) make almost photo-realistic impressions.

Response: Hawks are pretty common here - I once got one near my bird feeder. They perch differently than other birds - more vertically than horizontally. Crocus are in full swing here now!

Now we have a climbing Rose we can't get rid of. 😳. Twice over the last 30 odd years we have tried. Even had a professional Gardener try... Not to be. It's back in flower at the moment. Not that I don't love the flowers, it just attacks us when we try to do any other gardening around it as we don't always see the price runners 😄 Thank you again for the beautiful rose ATC. Hugs Ann

My yard is too wet and shady for most roses - except for the horrible wild multiflora which have grappling hooks for climbing trees - they grow roots where the branches touch the ground (like raspberries) and grow branches from their roots and reseed like crazy. To top it off, what smell they have is not nice. But I remember the roses of my childhood - so sweet.

Comment: Thanks for the lovely note. Sorry to hear of your health issues and salary contract troubles. I know how frustrating both can be. You must work in a school system--at least it sounds like the issues we had for years. Contract freezes and no pay increase for years and then a miniscule one that doesn't even cover the increased cost of medical insurance. I hope this all gets better soon for us all!

I'm not sure what the International stamp that you included in the envelope is for since this is a USA only swap and postage to Alaska is the same as to anywhere else in the USA, including Puerto Rico. If the envelope is 1 oz. or less, and it's being mailed to any US state or territory, then the cost is $0.50.
Response: I know, but the stamp was passed to me and I didn't feel that I should keep it.There was some confusion with the zines going from USA to International or vice versa. I'm in both so I try to keep them straight sending out, but sometimes you might have extra of one and none of the other. Thanks for the kind words.

Comment: Wow! What a beautiful sun pc! I love it! Sadly, fireflies don't live in AZ. I think they don't cross the Mississippi River or something. But I remember them fondly from living in TN when I was little. We'd also visit relatives in IL and catch them with our cousins. Such amazing little creatures!

I haven't heard of that paint (I think, maybe I did but know it under another name) And about the sleeves, I don't mind I always take them out of the sleeves and put them in those 9 pockets sleeves (the ones you also use pocket letters) in my ATC map.

I just love those kind of tangles, I like to draw little gardens and landscapes using tangles and those organic tangles like this one are perfect for that. Thank you for your beautifull swap :)

Response: Thank you! The paper was cotton cold press watercolor paper and the media was wax crayon and water color - the goldfish had some mica watercolor "Yasutomo Pearlescent Watercolor" and the haddock had Daniel Smith Duotone green. It's a lot of fun to experiment with (which is why you got two fish and I still have a couple left over).

Comment: This ATC is so beautiful, I can't believe it! How did you get so much detail on such a small card? What size pen did you use? Thank you so much.
Response: The smallest was Copic MultiLiner 0.05 - the paper is hot press watercolor paper. That grabs the ink better than regular card stock, I think. Sometimes the smaller pens won't write on some papers. I'm glad you like it!

Comment: Cecily,. A few points to consider. First tiny words for embellishments are single words spaced far enough apart so that they can be cut out and used on decorative Embellishments. I. E. Believe, Joy, Bliss, Etc. You may have thought you sent three sheets however you sent only 2, most of which are unusable because the font is too small, and ink is very pale. Ok A for effort. Like the regulations said, no rating down even if you don't like your swap. I followed the rules. I rated A 5, said Thank you and said I appreciated your efforts. I won't stoop to your level by resorting to rudeness and Ill manners. Suffice it to say, I don't care what you think of me. Perhaps one day I will be your partner...hmmmm?

Response: It wasn't much of a blizzard - 5 inches (which somehow winds up to 2 feet on the end of the driveway). I think the snow is over now, but April snow is not unheard of. Getting an idea is often the hardest part. Looking forward to receiving the end piece. I'll post a pic, so you can see, too. Thanks for the rating and even more for the note!

Comment: Great beginnings on the card. Hope I can live up to that standard of art. The metal punches are amazing!! Something I will try real soon. I recently got a Cuttlebug, hope it works on soda cans. I am using black, white & red on a series of PCs I am swapping. these hearts will fit right in - if I can bear to give them up.
Response: Cuttlebug should work fine - soda cans are very thin - I cut the tops & bottoms off with a single edge razor blade and ordinary scissors. Intricate dies like for butterflies can be tricky, but simple shapes and embossing are easy. Manicure filing sponges are good & cheap for sanding & buffing. I hope you have as much fun with that as I have.

Response: It's the only soft-drink that has genuine, accept-no-substitutes, sodium saccharine in it. They never stopped making it altogether, but it was hard to come by (like cane sugar Coke)... Apparently, it has a following. It's not that bad.~~~Thanks for the heart!

Response: I have Inktense pencils which, as the name implies, are quite intense in saturation. I haven't really combined the two yet but that's on my list.

Response: Yes, I did use regular small hand-held punches. I don't think it hurts them because the aluminum in soda cans is so thin nowadays and because the way to sharpen dull punches is to punch aluminum foil, so....well, time will tell. Thank you for the heart!

Western NC BBQ is more tomato bases and Eastern is more vinegar based. I'm with you on not liking the vinegar based as well, but I do like it.

Comment: Love the postcard you sent, but I'm sorry to report that it now looks like it's been through a thrashing machine. Nope, not courtesy the USPS, but rather, my incorrigible dog Gulliver, who, in an exuberant display of "Welcome home," grabbed the card and roughed it up a bit. It's actually quite funny and even endearing; I'll keep that postcard forever! Thanks so much!
